SACTCG's resident ecologist Zohara has done it again with another brilliant fact-sheet this time on two common eucalypts in the ACT! 🌿

Inspired by the discussions at SACTCG's Tree Week Plant ID events that have just finished, Zohara created a sample of what to look for when identifying two common gums: Brittle Gum and Scribbly Gum.

It's more difficult than it looks as both of these eucs can have:

✏️ Scribbles on the trunk
🌿 Long, narrow leaves
🤍 Smooth white bark

Find out the key differences below 🕵️‍♀️

Saturday Working Bee

Hi all!

Our next working bee is happening tomorrow, Saturday 9th May at the Cooma Back Creek site (behind Cooma Bowling Club) from 2pm to 4pm.

The plans for the afternoon are:

- to check, w**d & remove guards (if needed) from the plants on the bank of the creek as well as near the new footbridge at the horse yards
-to chip out the large thistles that are growing amongst the Carex and Poa plantings
-to cut and daub the woody w**ds on the hill near the southern end of the site (Coolamatong entrance)

Suitable gardening attire, gloves, hat and sturdy footwear are recommended as well as water to drink. We have some gardening tools available but it is always helpful if you can bring your own.

Everyone is welcome to attend, no experience is needed. Join us for a cuppa and a chat at the end of the working bee.

Friday Working Bee

A huge thankyou to all the wonderful volunteers that helped out at the planting morning on Saturday 11th April. In under 2 hours over 200 plants were planted, watered and protected with repurposed oyster pots followed by a well earned morning tea that was enjoyed by all.

Where: Platy Point (Mulach Street entrance to North Ridge Reserve)

Date and Time: Friday 24th April 9am to 11am

What to Bring: Wear suitable gardening attire, sturdy footwear, gloves and hat. Some water for drinking is also recommended.

Saturday Planting Day

Hi everyone

Join us for a community planting morning at the Mulach Street entrance to North Ridge Reserve Saturday, April 11th.

This is our first event at this location, right beside Cooma Creek. Our goal is to revitalise the area by planting a range of native grassland plants which will restore native habitat and biodiversity. The restoration initiative is proudly funded by Snowy Hydro Ltd.

Did you know that native grasslands are among the most species-rich Australian plant communities? These grasslands also act as carbon sinks, help stabilize soils, and are resilient to both drought and fire.

Location:

Mulach Street entrance to North Ridge Reserve - drive along Mulach Street past the dog pound and along the gravel road.

Date and Time:

Saturday, April 11th 9:15 am for a 9:30 am start

What to Bring:

Wear suitable gardening attire, gloves, a hat, and sturdy shoes.Bring your own water for drinking. If you have a mallet for hammering stakes or a trowel, please bring them along in case we need a few extras.

The aim is to finish around 11:00 am to 11:30 am to share some morning tea.

If you need more information, please comment below.

With most of the state’s land in private hands, how we manage our farms, bush blocks, and back paddocks can make a big difference for koalas and other native species.

Whether you’re managing livestock, conserving bush, or just starting small, here are a few ways you can help koalas:
🐨 Protect existing habitat: fence and conserve native vegetation to prevent livestock access
🐨 Improve degraded areas: manage w**ds and reduce invasive species to improve access to food trees
🐨 Connect habitat: plant local koala food and habitat trees to link corridors and help wildlife move safely across the landscape

It is getting to that time of the year when the queens are looking for a spot to overwinter, so a perfect time to trap them. If you need traps and/or lure head on down to one of our upcoming collection centres.
