The January Bushcare survey went really well..in that we were able to produce good maps of all Cotoneaster, Pyrocantha and other woody w**ds in the streets to the east of the Reserve up to about Orana Ave. These will come in handy for the campaign over the next 5 years. (Well, 50 years, let's face it.)

For the February Bushcare session we started work at the Makina Ave site which is earmarked for woody w**d control by bush regen contractors as soon as the grant funds are received, which we hope to be soon!!

This Saturday 17th the NRR Bushcare group won't be cutting out Cotoneaster. Instead we are starting a survey of woody w**ds (Cotoneaster, Pyrocantha etc) in verges of the streets in Cooma North, in the immediate vicinity of the Reserve.

This is to support the upcoming campaign to remove and replace Cotoneaster in these areas.

We're going to start this coming Saturday - meeting at 9am at Geringa Ave so we can provide the clipboards, base maps, pens and instructions. We have 3-4 people starting and will work in pairs.

If you are interested in joining us please private message me through this site.

We had a very productive morning on the 15th removing Cotoneaster from the Reserve. There were only four of us but we did excellent work.

Two of us have battery operated chainsaws to treat the larger Cotoneasters and sometimes Pyrocanthas - and the other two us use loppers, to treat the man medium sized ones. The masses of seedlings are treated afterwards using selective herbicide. The odd small non-native Euc and wattle were also treated.

The the improved condition of the Reserve is starting to now become obvious - although visitors who never knew of its previously infested state will not of course notice that it is anything other than native bush. (This is the trouble with this sort of work - people think it was always like that. We have our written records but need to take more photos!!)

The next Cotoneaster working bee is this coming Saturday (15th) . All welcome.

Because we are now a little past the water tanks, we are changing the meeting place - so we are meeting at the Minewa St gate at 9am.

If you're keen to come but late - here is a map to show you which tracks to walk from Minewa gate to get to the work site (Follow the big arrows in the map.)

As usual - please wear sensible work clothes, shoes, hat and bring gloves and loppers (and water...it is getting hotter).

Supported by Cooma Landcare and Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
