The Great Black Cockatoo Release - Gum Nuts needed!

Perth Wildlife Hospital (PWH) recently announced The Great Black Cockatoo Release. These amazing birds have been rehabilitated by dedicated staff and volunteers at PWH. The birds will be released over the 27-28 June 2026 weekend.

Unfortunately, registrations to attend the release are now fully booked. However, you can still make an important contribution to this important wildlife event!

Black-Cockatoos feed on the equivalent of 400 Marri seeds (gum nuts) a day in the wild. Before their release it is essential that they recognise and eat food that they would naturally forage for in the wild.

To this end, PWH would appreciate any contribution of gum nuts (unopened) that people may have access to. These can be picked up at your convenience by contacting Chris via our office (Mon-Fri, 9:30am-12:30pm, call 9383 4479) or dropping contributions off at Perth Wildlife Hospital at 170 Camboon Rd in Malaga between 9am and 5pm, seven days a week.

Thank you in advance for your contributions!

A great little vid on planting in sandy soil.

We’d like to add that when you dig the hole for your native plant, fill it with water and let it drain. Do that 3 to 4 times then pop your plant in, back fill the hole while building a well around the plant and water in with around 6L of water. Then sit back and let it grow. If you’re brave enough, we also recommend not watering again unless we get a heatwave. If you keep watering regularly, you’ll encourage surface level roots rather than deep roots. Surface roots won’t survive heatwaves.

I had the privilege of attending the City of Rockingham’s 2026 Volunteer Recognition Awards as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations.

This year’s theme, “Your Year to Volunteer”, is a wonderful reminder that every act of volunteering big or small helps strengthen our community.

It was inspiring to recognise our incredible nominees, finalists and volunteers whose dedication touches every corner of life in Rockingham. From community services and sport to the arts, environmental care and emergency support, volunteers truly are the backbone of our City.

Congratulations to all nominees and finalists across the six award categories and thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, skills and compassion to help others. Your efforts make Rockingham a more connected, caring and inclusive community.

Thank you also to Magenta Marshall, our Councillors, City staff, judges and everyone who joined us for this special evening celebrating the people who make such a meaningful difference every day. 💙

Celebrating with our two finalists for volunteer awards.
