Congratulations Steve!

Today Steve successfully passed his Operational Assessment and was officially awarded his MR Coxswain Restricted Rating, a huge and well-deserved achievement!

A tremendous amount of time and effort goes into this level of training, and Steve's commitment, dedication, and hard work leading up to today have paid off. As our Unit's newest qualified MR Coxswain Restricted, we've certainly boosted our capacity to respond to midweek inshore incidents.

Thank you, Steve, for all your time and effort spent training and responding to all those call outs.

Again, congrats and well done!

A boat full of Marine Rescue Point Danger volunteers, family and friends hit the water this morning for a thoroughly enjoyable 3-hour whale watching cruise aboard the George Bass of Cooly Tweed Cruises.

The trip was organised as one of the social events our unit arranges for our volunteers, our way of saying thank you to our amazing volunteers and their families for the dedication, commitment and countless hours spent volunteering.

We'd barely cleared the bar, just a few minutes out, when our boat was "mugged" by a pod of whales! A whale mugging is when whales approach a vessel out of their own curiosity and choose to stick around, circling, diving under and popping up alongside the boat. It's one of the most special things that can happen out on the water, and it gave everyone on board an incredible, up-close encounter with these gentle giants right from the get-go.

A huge thank you to Steve & Linda from Cooly Tweed Cruises, and of course the fantastic crew aboard the George Bass, for such a lovely and memorable experience on the water today.

LONG RANGE RESCUE: 50nm ROUND TRIP!

About lunchtime today, we got a call for help from 2 mates in their 7m open cabin who were on a day out fishing a long way offshore.

The guys were stuck 25nm east of Tweed Heads with reported engine troubles. That's a serious run out, mixing it with the big ships , but with good conditions our crew pointed the bow east and didn't hang about.

On arrival, it turned out the gremlins were battery-related, and a jump start seemed to solve the problem, at least initially. After shadowing the vessel back for a few miles, further issues and limp mode being triggered called for a tow for the remaining 20nm.

Huge thanks to our amazing volunteer crew onboard Point Danger 31, Tod, Guy and Steve supported by our Radio Operators Gary, Joseph and Brant.

After a 50nm round trip, 250L of fuel and hours on the water, 2 extremely grateful and relieved fishermen were towed back to the safety of the Tweed River.

Great job, well done!

JOINT RESCUE EFFORT: Marine Rescue Cape Byron, Marine Rescue Brunswick & Marine Rescue Point Danger

A great example of teamwork​ from across our​ Northern Rivers units yesterday, when crews from Marine Rescue Brunswick in BR30 and Marine Rescue Point Danger in PD31 combined efforts to bring a 14m yacht safely to shore after it suffered fuel problems just north of Cape Byron​ and required a tow into safe waters.

The call for help was received by Marine Rescue Cape Byron radio base who activated and coordinated ​the response of both rescue vessels. BR30 was first on scene shortly after lunchtime, getting the vessel under tow with 2 persons on board. With ​a draft​ of 2.1m ​a little deep for crossing Brunswick bar at the time BR30 continued north and met up with PD31​, activated ​earlier in the afternoon to meet BR30 and take over the tow ​to continue the ​tasking north into the Tweed River.

What started just after lunch stretched into the early evening, until the yacht was safely secured on a mooring in the Tweed River. The very grateful owners were full of thanks and praise for all volunteer crews' efforts.

Great work by everyone involved​ across all 3 units. Well done.

A massive shoutout to Daniel and the legends at NRT-Engineering for the incredible work completed yesterday on Point Danger 20!

We had a damaged sampson post that needed to be re-engineered and replaced. For those wondering, it's the heavy-duty post we use to secure tow lines when assisting other vessels in distress.

The team from NRT-Engineering made the trip from Lismore out to us a few times to inspect the vessel, work through the best solution, and then headed back to their workshop to fabricate a brand new sampson post.

Yesterday, with PD20 at the Tweed Boatyard, NRT returned with a crew of four, a fully equipped mobile workshop and got straight into it. Before long the old post was out, the new one welded in, and Point Danger 20 was back in service, same day. Incredible effort.

A huge thank you to Daniel and the crew at , and to the team at GCBoatyards Tweed Heads for their support. Top-quality workmanship, all great people to work with, and absolute professionals from start to finish. We couldn't be happier with the result!

Superb ex*****on, picking up 2 people and their disabled JetSki off the sandbar in the river.

The guys were just off the bar and pulled in by fellow boater in the area, we met them and took over the job.

Nice work Steve.

Unit Executive Appointment and Radio Operator Qualification:

Today at the units Annual General Meeting, members received their epaulettes in recognition of the following milestones and positions:

Mark Sladden qualified as a radio operator. Since joining our unit, Mark has earned his Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP - Commercial Radio Licence) and logged dozens of hours of service in our Radio Base, ensuring the safety of mariners and our rescue crew, and monitoring the Tweed Bar.

Michele Pippen has been appointed to the role of Deputy Unit Commander (Operations), supporting our members at all levels and troubleshooting administrative and operations based problems on the fly.

Joseph Khoury has joined the unit's executive team as Training Systems Officer, supporting the training and development of our radio operators and rescue crew and ensuring adherence to our obligations as a registered training organisation (RTO).

Congratulations on your achievements and appointments, and thank you for your service to our community.

Member Recognition: NSW Premier Flood Emergency Citation

Today at the units Annual General Meeting, we recognised a number of our members who received the NSW Premier's Flood Emergency Citation.

The Premier’s Flood Emergency Citation recognises the extraordinary response efforts during the major flood events between 2021 and 2023.

Our members assisted with radio and communications, first aid, logistics support (refuelling and emergency supplies) and administrative duties.
