This National Reconciliation Week, we confirm we are All In for reconciliation with the Rangers we work alongside, with our partners, and with all Indigenous people. We are proud to work shoulder to shoulder on Country with Traditional Owners whose cultural knowledge has shown them how to manage these lands and waters for many millennia. We are honoured that they choose to share some of this knowledge with us.

Reconciliation is not just something we talk about during one week of the year. It is reflected year round in the relationships we have built, the opportunities we create together, and the commitment we have all made to working together.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters where we work and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

We really enjoyed supporting the Holy Spirit College, Cooktown Campus students to work with our local Queensland National Parks Rangers to tidy up Keatings Lagoon Conservation Park after a big wet season! The students put in a huge effort to get things ready for the many visitors who will visit Mulbabidgee (Keatings Lagoon) this year.

A landholder in the Endeavour River Catchment recently contacted us requesting help to manage a salvinia outbreak in their dam. Salvinia molesta is a highly invasive aquatic w**d that rapidly chokes dams and wetlands, smothering other vegetation and disrupting oxygen levels in the water. This w**d can double in size in as little as four days, meaning a small infestation can quickly take over an entire waterbody.

Last week we conducted a first control treatment. Airborne AG sprayed the dam by drone, and then we followed with manual spraying around the edges. We’ll return in the coming weeks for a follow-up spray, and then ongoing monitoring and hand-picking will continue for several years.

Controlling salvinia is a long-term commitment. Even the smallest fragment of the plant can regrow, so permanently clearing a dam can take up to five years of regular follow-up work. We’ve successfully cleared dams in the past, but it requires persistence!

The effort is well worth it. Salvinia spreads easily between waterbodies via water birds, pigs, cattle and other animals, putting the magnificent wetlands across our region at risk.

Salvinia is a Category 3 Restricted Invasive Plant in Queensland, meaning it is illegal to release it into the environment, sell it, or give it away. We can help!
If you have salvinia in a dam or wetland — we can assist with control.
If you have salvinia in a pond or aquarium — we can help dispose of it safely and suggest some beautiful native aquatic plants to replace it.
A big thank you to this landholder who came to us for assistance!

If you see this w**d anywhere in the region, please let us know:

Our team has been hard at work out at Rossville planting hundreds of trees with support from Cape York Water Partnership crew. During the Cyclone Jasper floods, Wallaby Creek jumped its bank (or avulsed) at this site, destroying several hectares of riparian rainforest. We've been working with several landholders for the past 6 months to re-shape and revegetate this area. This will provide habitat for wildlife, and also help to stabilise the stream bank. Our future plans include planting out several thousand trees across the damaged area.

This project is funded through the Australian and Queensland Government's TC Jasper Environmental Recovery Package.

Check out this fascinating podcast episode from passionate young science communicator, Xanthe Smith, who grew up here in Cooktown! After school, Xanthe studied at the University of Wellington in New Zealand and then went on to an internship with the NZ Office of the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor. She's hoping to get into an ABC Cadetship this year, so let's help to spread the word about her amazing work!

Sunday was a great day for a beach clean up! We had a fantastic morning on Gamaay Country on the beautiful North Shore - our amazing volunteers collected over a tonne of marine debris.

Thanks to the Gamaay Traditional Owners, Tangaroa Blue, Cooktown's Queensland National Parks crew, Nick from Riverbend Tours, the Cooktown Crocs Underwater Hockey team, and Cook Shire Council for supporting this event - we couldn't have done it without you all.

The biggest thanks goes to all our volunteers who are passionate about looking after our beaches and the Great Barrier Reef.

This was a ReefClean event funded by the Australian Government's Reef Trust and delivered by Tangaroa Blue in partnership with South Cape York Catchments.
