Burnie Community Stands in Solidarity with Nepal at Flood Memorial Shrine

Nepalese and wider North West Tasmanian community gathered at the Burnie Waterfront on Sunday morning for a heartfelt Nepal Flood Memorial Shrine, honouring those who lost their lives in the recent devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.
Organised by Burnie Nepalese Community Inc., the memorial brought together government representatives, local councillors, multicultural leaders, and community members to pay their respects, offer prayers, and stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal during one of the country’s most difficult times.
The memorial service was led by Burnie Nepalese Community President, Mr Nitesh Subedi, who welcomed guests and thanked everyone for their support and compassion towards the Nepalese community.
The event was attended by representatives from all levels of government and community organisations, including State Government Ministers, local government councillors, multicultural community leaders, and representatives from various community organisations across North West Tasmania.
The memorial featured a symbolic shrine, floral tributes, candles, a minute of silence, prayers, and messages of hope for those affected by the disaster.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Nitesh Subedi thanked everyone who attended despite it being Father’s Day, acknowledging that many families had chosen to spend part of their day standing with the people of Nepal.
“Today’s gathering demonstrates that compassion has no borders. Although we are far from Nepal, our hearts remain with the families who have lost loved ones and with those working tirelessly in rescue and recovery efforts. We sincerely thank everyone who joined us today in remembrance and solidarity.”
The President also acknowledged the ongoing support shown by government representatives, local councils, community organisations, volunteers, and members of the wider Tasmanian community.
Burnie Nepalese Community Inc. extended its gratitude to all distinguished guests, media representatives, and community members whose attendance reflected Tasmania’s strong commitment to multiculturalism, inclusion, and community support.
The organisation hopes the memorial not only honoured the victims but also raised awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Nepal and encouraged continued support for those affected.
