When someone says they’re not OK, it can feel confronting - and that’s normal.

Your role isn’t to fix their situation. Just listen, try to stay calm, and show you care. A small moment of support can make a big difference.

Parents and carers can play a big role in supporting young people to keep themselves and others safe when they talk online about self-harm and su***de.

The Blue Card is a simple tool to assist in removing some of the difficulty in asking someone for help. The young person in need knows what support they are asking for – because it is clearly written on the back of the card. Asking for help can be the first step to recovery and future resilience.

People don’t always say when they’re struggling. Sometimes it shows up as a cancelled plan, a quieter voice, or a shift you can’t quite name.

If you notice someone pulling back, reach out. You don't need to pressure them to share or talk. Simply let them know you have noticed a change, you care and you're there for them.

It might take some time before they feel comfortable talking, and that's OK. Knowing they have someone willing to listen may be all they need for now.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health concern, or who is in a mental health crisis. Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

Shoalhaven Su***de Prevention and Awareness Network (SSPAN) delivers MHFA training delivered by Instructors who are accredited by MHFA Australia.

If you are interested in training with Shoalhaven SPAN, please register your interest here ➡️ https://www.sspan.org.au/education-training/mhfa-training/.
Once we have received enough interest, we will work towards scheduling the training.
