As more than 50 of us gathered at Condong Bowling Club for our weekly Shine On Wollumbin, we reflected on research from universities in Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom showing that when people sing together, their breathing patterns and heart rhythms can become synchronised, helping to foster a sense of connection and wellbeing.

It certainly makes sense when you look around the room each week. Joining Shine on Wollumbin is often associated with increased feelings of connection and social bonding. Singing can reduce stress, improve breathing regulation, and enhance feelings of wellbeing and belonging — all of which were clearly evident in the room today.

We wished Julie, Keryn and Coral the happiest of birthdays and thanked Erin for making a special dash for biscuits and grapes to accompany the delicious scones so lovingly prepared for us each week by JT’S Kitchen .

Ian, Trish, Dee Dee, Phil and Rob led us through songs across the ages, including Sweet Caroline, Try a Little Kindness, A White Sport Coat, Mamma Mia, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Don’t Fence Me In, and many more. We finished with What a Wonderful World, the perfect way to close a truly wonderful morning.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our volunteers who helped set up, pack up, put out name tags, clean up, and everything in between. Thank you, Jackie and crew — you are stars in our eyes.

A reminder that from now on, we will be taking our mugs home and bringing them back each week to help reduce washing up time. A bin will also be provided at the door as we leave so that everyone can dispose of their rubbish on the way out.

Thank you also to those who signed up for future volunteering roles. We are delighted to have some extra helping hands joining the team each week.

Until next time, take care. 🎶💙

Your generosity, kindness and willingness to help in both the big and small moments never go unnoticed. From greeting people at the door to helping create meaningful connections and joyful experiences, you are the reason Shine on Wollumbin continues to live up to its name.

It was wonderful to be back at Shine On Wollumbin today after a week’s hiatus.

Some 50 of us gathered together, and little did we know until the wonderful Leonie arrived with her bee in tow that today was World Bee Day. And yes — bee as in buzz, not bidet! 🐝

In keeping with the B-inspired theme, we enjoyed a fabulous morning of songs including The Birds and the Bees, Bye Bye Love, Baby Face, Blowin’ in the Wind, Blue Suede Shoes, Big Spender, and many more. We also welcomed three new attendees today and discovered we had a table of Bruces - three of them!

We celebrated Leonie’s husband Peter, who recently won the Men’s Shed Billy Cart Race at Bangalow — a fantastic achievement!

Of course, no gathering would be complete without getting the blood pumping, so we all got up for the Hokey Pokey, with muscles moving and plenty of laughs as our bottoms went in and our bottoms went out — all in the spirit of the B theme, of course. 😝

It was lovely having Dede, Trish, Leonie, Phil, Rob and Ian up front leading us through songs from across the decades. The room was absolutely vibing.

A special welcome to Kath who popped in to see us after recovering from a recent hospital stay, and I have to say, she was looking fantastic. Her big smile said it all.

Thank you, as always, to Dave and his team at Condong Bowling Club for providing such a welcoming space for us each week, to JT’S Kitchen for baking our delicious scones, and to Jackie and volunteers who set up tables, organise name tags, and keep the wheels turning behind the scenes. We appreciate you all so much.

We now have a two-week break and will return on Wednesday 10 June.

When we return, Leonie won’t be with us every week as it will be show season — and did you know she is also an agricultural show judge? She certainly keeps busy! While she’ll now be joining us monthly rather than weekly, we want to sincerely thank Leonie for all she has contributed over the past 10 months. We love you, Leonie, and we are so grateful you’ll still be coming along.

So mark your calendars everyone — Tuesday 10 June — we’ll be back, and we can’t wait!
