Salve, capoeira family.
I write this letter with an open heart, moved by gratitude, respect, and a commitment to truth. Words are not always enough, but today they are necessary to honor the journey of someone I saw grow into a true leader within our community: Mestre Damiano, our Camaleão.
I met Damiano when he first arrived in Melbourne, years ago. He introduced himself with humility, respect, and simplicity — qualities that are rare and essential, not only in capoeira but in life. Always present, he would visit on Fridays after work, sit quietly, observe, join our events, and make himself part of the community. He was there because he cared, because he respected, because he wanted to learn.
Over the years, I witnessed his transformation.
I saw a young man mature.
I saw someone who worked with passion, who sought growth without stepping on anyone, who unified people instead of dividing them. I saw the rise of a true leader — the kind the world needs more of.
I must also acknowledge another person who plays a similar role in our community: Professora Verônica, “Amizade.”
Both carry the rare gift of bringing people together, uniting, welcoming, and helping capoeira fulfill its purpose as a bridge between cultures, colors, histories, and groups. They are examples worthy of admiration and respect — examples that show the path many should follow.
Because, unfortunately, we still see separation.
We still see divided groups, inflated egos, unnecessary conflicts.
But that is not the spirit of capoeira.
Capoeira is community.
Capoeira is union.
Capoeira is walking together.
