Salve, capoeira family.

I write this letter with an open heart, moved by gratitude, respect, and a commitment to truth. Words are not always enough, but today they are necessary to honor the journey of someone I saw grow into a true leader within our community: Mestre Damiano, our Camaleão.

I met Damiano when he first arrived in Melbourne, years ago. He introduced himself with humility, respect, and simplicity — qualities that are rare and essential, not only in capoeira but in life. Always present, he would visit on Fridays after work, sit quietly, observe, join our events, and make himself part of the community. He was there because he cared, because he respected, because he wanted to learn.

Over the years, I witnessed his transformation.
I saw a young man mature.
I saw someone who worked with passion, who sought growth without stepping on anyone, who unified people instead of dividing them. I saw the rise of a true leader — the kind the world needs more of.

I must also acknowledge another person who plays a similar role in our community: Professora Verônica, “Amizade.”
Both carry the rare gift of bringing people together, uniting, welcoming, and helping capoeira fulfill its purpose as a bridge between cultures, colors, histories, and groups. They are examples worthy of admiration and respect — examples that show the path many should follow.

Because, unfortunately, we still see separation.
We still see divided groups, inflated egos, unnecessary conflicts.
But that is not the spirit of capoeira.

Capoeira is community.
Capoeira is union.
Capoeira is walking together.

FULL LETTER ON COMMEMTS

12/11/2025

It is with profound sadness that I share that our dear friend, brother, comrade, and master — Mestre Borracha (José de Amorim) — passed away today, Wednesday, November 12th, 2025, in Sydney, Australia.

Over the past months, he fought bravely, with strength and dignity. Yesterday, thanks to everyone’s support and prayers, his sister was able to fly all the way from Acre, Brazil, to be by his side — just as he wished. Through her presence, he received comfort, affection, and peace from his loved ones who could not be there in his final moments.

Now, he rests in peace.
And we remain here — holding his memory close, grateful for the life he lived and for the legacy he leaves in every roda, every rhythm, and every heart he touched.

We pray for his soul to find light and rest,
and for his family — his wife, his children, and all loved ones — to find comfort and peace during this difficult time.

Mestre Borracha was more than a capoeirista.
He was a spirit of laughter, strength, and generosity — a man who gave of himself with heart and humility. His energy will never fade. Every time the berimbau calls, every time a song rises in the roda, his axé will be there.

Thank you all for your care, support, and prayers for Borracha and his family.

Axé, Mestre Borracha.
Your journey continues through each of us.

Today, my daughter, Nour, turns one year old.
I celebrate her light, her laughter, and the joy she’s brought into our lives.
Thank you all for being part of this journey.

Today, she’s the reason I want to wake up every morning —
to stay alert, work hard, be a better person, and take care of my health.

I love you, my baby. 💛

Why Do You Pay for Your Child to Train Capoeira?

One parent asked another:
“Why do you spend so much time and money with Capoeira?
The classes, the rodas, the events, the uniforms, the travel… all that effort just to see your child training?”

The other parent smiled and said:
“I have a little secret… I don’t really pay for Capoeira.”

Surprised, the first parent asked:
“What do you mean you don’t pay for Capoeira?”

The answer came with calm and certainty:

“I pay for those moments when my child feels tired and wants to give up… but doesn’t.
I pay for the times they fall and get back up again, stronger than before.

I pay for the friendships they make, the teachers they admire, and the lessons they’ll remember for life.
I pay for my child to learn discipline, respect, teamwork, and gratitude.

I pay for the courage they find when they miss a movement but try again.
I pay for them to believe in themselves and to understand that nothing great comes without effort.

I pay for them to be surrounded by culture, rhythm, and positive people… instead of distractions that lead nowhere.
I pay for them to be part of a community that teaches respect for elders, for nature, for ancestors, and for others.

So no, I don’t pay for classes.
I pay for growth, for character, for joy.
For the lessons that will guide my child long after the music stops.

Capoeira is more than training… it’s a way of life.
And for me, that’s the best investment I could ever make.”

What about you, parents?
What kind of education, discipline, values and cultural experience do you want to leave as part of your children’s life story?

“The Capoeira Boy” is the inspiring story of Val, now , a boy who, despite being born into a humble family, discovers his passion for capoeira. Against his father’s will, he trains in secret, transforming his art into his profession. His journey takes him from his home in Brazil to Africa and the world, fulfilling his dream of traveling and becoming a master who inspires new generations. This is the story of a dream that comes true with open eyes.
