This study aimed to develop the first Aboriginal-led co-designed tool to map Australian Aboriginal children’s social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) based on holistic definitions of wellbeing that have been discussed, supported and refined by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over the last 30 years.

With further development, the measure will provide a robust and comprehensive picture of a child’s SEWB for practitioners, clinicians and researchers working with individuals or families.

The Aboriginal Children’s SEWB Tool may not be reproduced without permission.

Despite having high health needs, older Māori, the Indigenous peoples of New Zealand, have lower service utilisation of aged residential care (ARC) services.

This study aimed to examine the role of clinical healthcare professionals and the influence that whānau have, which may impede or facilitate older Māori utilisation of ARC, through the reported experiences of older Māori.

The study shows that older Māori and whānau (family groups) experienced marginalisation and acts of racism manifested in implicit and explicit interpersonal clinical healthcare practices in ARC and community-based settings.

The findings clearly indicate the need for greater recognition of the unique role that culture plays in the delivery of care provision across different contexts of care.

Last month, we had the opportunity to host our All Staff Gathering on Wurundjeri Country, a week-long gathering to spend time together and strengthen the connections that bring us together at Lowijta Institute. ❤️💛🖤

We were honoured to start the week with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and their cultural and guided tour along the Birrarung.

Across the week, there were plenty of yarns, workshops and opportunities to connect, reflect and look ahead as we prepare for the 5th International Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Conference, taking place from 8–10 June 2027 on Larrakia Country, Garramilla (Darwin).

The Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC) is the most widely used psychological instrument to measure parenting sense of competence worldwide.

This study was the first to evaluate the cross-cultural validity of the PSOC among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

After accounting for item redundancy, an adapted 14-item version of the PSOC displayed excellent psychometric properties and cross-cultural invariance. The 14-item PSOC is readily available to be used in Australia.

Last week during his whirlwind visit to Kaurna Country, Head of the Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation Deb Edwards hosted the Hon Dr Kevin Rudd AC for a viewing of the statue of Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue in Tarntanya Wama (Elder Park).

Dr Rudd fondly recalled many times spent with Dr O’Donoghue during his term as the 26th Prime Minister of Australia. Importantly, the most significant moment they shared together was Dr Rudd’s historic national Apology to the Stolen Generations in 2008.

Dr Rudd recalled that she told him as they embraced on the floor of parliament, “Wonderfully done Kevie, only 200 years too late.” That was Lowitja he said.

Deb shared with him that Dr O’Donoghue kept a framed photograph in her room of the two of them on that day, and that it continually stood as one of the most important days of her life, and, for the lives of so many of the nation’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
