Riparian devastated during the 2021 floods is being rehabilitated by volunteers and some funding. Morphing adaptation works into mitigation by planting lots of native trees and bank stabilisation species such as Lamandra.

Why fencing the River is good.

Fencing waterways and controlling stock access is regarded as the first stage in realising a range of farm benefits including:
1 reducing stock loss from bogging and drowning;
2. minimise top soil loss by reducing erosion;
3. Improve human health by minimising manure contamination of waterways for those downstream
4. Improve fishing habitats
5. Improved habitat for iconic species such as Platypus.

Realise the ecological services these initiatives can bring to your farm by fencing a minimum of 20 m from the current bank, ideally you would fence 35-40 m from the bank as it reduces the costs of fencing by having straighter fence lines AND reduces erosion in times of flood.

The Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife have generously donated funds for ASF to increase our local community nursery production, supplying local endemic plants for riparian corridor remediation in the Pappinbarra Valley, NSW, Australia. They will also assist in ongoing weeding of remediated areas through 2024. This project received funding through the community nursery and ecological restoration components of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife Landscape Resilience program. Repairing the riparian corridor along the Pappinbarra River has been a twenty year project for Kelly. Working with 12 farmers along the river she has supplemented her in-kind work with grants to support bank restoration. The NSW Reconstruction authority has supported the rehabilitation with earthworks to stabilise the bank taken out in the last flood. Kelly grows her own plants and donates locally sourced seeds and plants to restore critical habitat for Platypus, Koala and Powerful Owl. Floods washed away restoration efforts over last 20 years but that work reduced the impacts of the flood. Picking up and starting again will ensure the next flood impacts next time will be minimal.

Growing out local endemics for our revegetation works along the Pappinbarra River. Trying for as much diversity as possible with Water Gums, Lomandra, Sandpaper Fig, Turpentine, Native Hibiscus, Blackbutt, Illawarra Flame, Casuarina, Brush Box, Koala species - Euc. Punctuate, as well as Bangalow Palms to name a few. Creating riparian habitat for Koala, Platypus and Powerful Owl.

Planting natives along the Riparian Corridor on the Pappinbarra River after some bank stabilisation works completed by Soil Conservation Service. Plants grown from local endemic native species at our own community nursery. Re-creating native habitat lost during recent floods. Great to get on country with restoring ecological services.
