For Body Image & Eating Disorder Awareness Week (BIEDAW), Nourish To Flourish is sharing a new presentation exploring something that can be difficult for families and carers to understand — body image and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

Body image isn't just about how someone looks. It's about how they think, feel and experience their body.

What someone is experiencing internally may be very different from what we see from the outside. And sometimes, the things we say with the best intentions — like “But you look fine!” — may not actually help.

In this presentation, we explore:

- What body image really means
- How body image concerns and BDD can affect thoughts, feelings and behaviour
- Why reassurance isn't always helpful
- How to respond without reinforcing negative beliefs
- Practical communication strategies for parents and carers
- Ways to build confidence, resilience and self-worth beyond appearance
- How we can create a more body-kind environment

Drawing on lived experience, current evidence and trusted resources, this presentation is designed to help families feel more informed, supported and less alone.

At Nourish To Flourish, we know that finding the time and capacity to access support can be difficult when you're juggling work, family, appointments and your caring role.

Our current support group runs Friday mornings from 9:45am–11:45am, and we're exploring whether offering an evening session every second week, alternating with our Friday morning group, could make support more accessible to more carers.

We'd love to hear from you!

Whether you've attended our group before, currently attend, or have never been able to make it along, your feedback matters.

The survey only takes a couple of minutes to complete, and your responses will help us shape our future support groups around what carers actually need.

Please take a few minutes to complete our survey:

The Eating Disorder Voice: Understanding the Illness Behind the Thoughts

Have you ever wondered why your loved one says things that don't seem to make sense?

Why do they believe they're “not sick enough”?

Why can every meal trigger fear, guilt or endless negotiation?

And why doesn't reassurance seem to convince them otherwise?

The answer often lies in the eating disorder voice.

In our latest YouTube presentation, we explore what the eating disorder voice is, how it develops, and why it can become so powerful.

We look at how the illness can distort thinking, create fear and convince someone that its rules are keeping them safe — even when those rules are causing harm.

Most importantly, understanding the eating disorder voice can help carers recognise that the illness is speaking — not the person they know and love.

NEW YOUTUBE VIDEO UPLOADED!

For someone living with an eating disorder, thoughts about food can become constant, intrusive and exhausting.

But food noise isn't simply “thinking about food too much.”

In Video 1 of our 3-part Food Noise & Eating Disorders series, we explore:
What food noise is and why it becomes so persistent
How the eating disorder voice influences thoughts, emotions and behaviours
The anxiety cycle and why eating disorder behaviours can become reinforced
Why eating disorder rules can become stronger over time
Why reassurance doesn't always quiet the fear
How externalising the eating disorder can reduce blame and improve communication
And why recovery is possible — the eating disorder voice can become quieter

What is food noise, and why does it feel so overwhelming for someon...
