Today, we honour the enduring legacy of the late Eddie Koiki Mabo - a proud Meriam man from Mer (Murray Island) in Zenadth Kes and a tireless advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land rights.

His work led to the landmark 1992 High Court decision that overturned the false doctrine of terra nullius, recognising for the first time in law what has always been true - that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on, cared for, and maintained deep connections to Country for tens of thousands of years.

But Koiki Mabo’s fight for justice began long before the courts. In the 1970s, he and Bonita Mabo co-founded the Townsville Black Community School - creating a place where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children could learn their languages, culture, and history free from racism and deficit narratives in education.

He later served as President of the National Aboriginal Education Committee, continuing to advocate for the right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to learn in ways that strengthen identity, culture, and pride.

Today, we remember Eddie Koiki Mabo not only for his legal legacy, but for his unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and education grounded in culture and community.

Today is National Sorry Day.

Held annually on the 26th of May, National Sorry Day marks the anniversary of the 1997 Bringing Them Home Report being tabled in the Australian Parliament.

We remember the Stolen Generations.
We stand with families who continue to carry the impacts of removal - past and present.
And we hold space for those still searching, still healing, still connected through culture and kinship despite every attempt to sever it.

The removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children did not end. It continues today, through systems that still too often fail to centre culture and truth. The education system has been, and continues to be, complicit in the removal of culture and identity. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were, and still are, pushed into Western systems of learning that deny connection to kinship, Country, language, culture and truth.

NIYEC stands with our mob in truth-telling, healing, and in building education systems that do not repeat harm.

Sorry must mean change.
Sorry must mean action.
Sorry must mean it does not continue.

Sorry means you don’t do it again.

✨ New Logo, Same Mission ✨
After 10 years, we’ve refreshed our look - but our mission hasn’t changed.
Our original logo was created by Krystal Hurst, Worimi artist and owner of Gillawara Arts, and Kimiah Alberts, Gungalu, Koinjmal, Yiman, and South Sea Islander graphic designer and owner of Wantok Designs.
We are a diverse group of young people, from many Countries and rivers, walking together for our right to equitable education.
With our minds, hearts, and hands together as one, we are a powerful force for change, creating a culturally safe education system where our mob can thrive for life.
This update is just the beginning. Stay tuned - there’s more to come!
