⚠️MURRAY RD + ELIZABETH ST NOW THE ONLY ARTERIALS IN THE AREA WITH NO SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION - current, DTP approved or under review.
👏🏽There has been a raft of welcome recent announcements of speed limit reductions being approved or reviewed. These even include DTP approving Sydney Rd to go from 60km/h to 40km/h where it intersects with SWARM’s section of Gaffney-Murray.
⁉️Meanwhile DTP has stated via the previous Minister that 60km/h is ‘appropriate” for Murray Rd. This appears to contravene their own guidelines. Not least because Merri-bek Council deems the Elizabeth St end of Murray an ACTIVITY ST, qualifying it for 40km/h under the DTPguidelines. And the Gaffney St end is ear-marked by the State Government to be a KEY PEDESTRIAN STREET because it borders and intersects the COBURG ACTIVITY CENTRE.
⚠️Thank you to Michael from SWARM for putting together this map (Pic 1) which shows Murray Rd and Elizabeth St are (dangerous) 60km/h outliers among local arterials, all of which have at least some sections with current, DTP approved or under review, all day speed limit reductions.
💥It’s probably no coincidence that the second highest number of incidents recorded on the SWARM Incident Reporter are at the intersection of Murray and Elizabeth (Pic 2)
This dangerous Activity St zone includes and vulnerable road users, Barry Beckett Children’s Centre, , Cox Reserve Playground, Newlands shops, Pre-School, Maternal Child Health and Senior Citizens.
