High School for Coburg (HSC) is a group of parents and community who successfully campaigned for a 7-12 general entry public high school in Coburg. In 2012 Martin Dixon, Minister for Education announced that in 2015, Coburg Senior High would expand to include a junior campus. In February 2015, Coburg High School's junior campus opened with 170 Year 7s. Our group continues to support and lobby for our Coburg High in any way we can.

❤️ We LOVE the work have been doing up this way and have been meaning to do a post on the beautiful new path through Edgars Creek parklands connecting with the Ronald St bridge over Edgars Creek.

And this smoothing of the corners and removing the ditch at the beg button at the pool crossing is a fantastic continuation of the good work and will make cycling easier.

⚠️ BUT this set up is temporarily extremely unsafe!

As the local who sent us the video said:

“You have to go out onto the road to press the button, or go out onto the road to walk past the obstruction”

⚠️ TRUCKS CONTINUE TO MOUNT THE SHARED PATH AFTER NO SAFETY CHANGES INCLUDED IN RECENT RESURFACING WORKS

🚸 Here is how this is impacting a parent trying to safely cross the Murray and Elizabeth intersection with a pram:

“It’s really hard to cross in the actual crossing zone with a pram, because the pavement is so cracked and degraded. There are no TGSIs anymore [Tactile Ground Surface Indicators] and the only way you can smoothly push a pram (or presumably would be the same for a wheelchair) down is to go towards the right, out of the designated crossing zone, into the area where the trucks regularly mount the pavement 🫠 So you have to either do that, which is not safe, or shove your pram really hard to get it over the bumps and cracks.”

What’s that saying about doing the same thing over and over again and getting the same results?

CEMENT SPILL - AGAIN
We have been alerted this morning of a cement truck with hazard lights on Murray just before Elizabeth intersection attempting to clean up spilt concrete. Some things never change!

This 60km/h stretch of Murray Rd has had a long-standing issue with trucks spilling concrete. The whole intersection has just been completely resurfaced and line markings repainted with absolutely NO SAFETY CHANGES - so why would anything change?

Trucks have also continued to mount the path turning into Murray from Elizabeth St (we will post separately on that)

Just do it!

Just do it!

Climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and healthy lifestyle goals should make active transport like cycling a no-brainer. So why does Australia struggle to build a bike culture?

💎 Coburg Olympic Swimming Pool is the “Jewel of Murray Rd” so we are very happy to host Friends of Coburg Olympic Pool’s End of Season Survey Report on our website! Check out the report at the link in comments.

📣 END OF SEASON SURVEY REPORT!
Friends of Coburg Olympic Pool (FCOP) is excited to share our End of Season Survey Report for the 2025-26 summer season. And what a beautiful season it was! 🏊🏼‍♀️

🙏We extend a huge thank you to the 127 pool users who completed it in less than a week!
🙏 A big thank you also to for hosting the report on their website! Coburg Olympic is “The Jewel of Murray Rd” after all, and as the survey shows, a large majority of respondents walked or rode to the pool!

🔗 SURVEY REPORT is linked in bio and highlights on Instagram, and in comments and profile links on Facebook.

Have a read of our recommendations and consider putting in a brief submission to Merri-bek Council’s budget which is open until Thursday 21 May.

⚠️MURRAY RD + ELIZABETH ST NOW THE ONLY ARTERIALS IN THE AREA WITH NO SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION - current, DTP approved or under review.

👏🏽There has been a raft of welcome recent announcements of speed limit reductions being approved or reviewed. These even include DTP approving Sydney Rd to go from 60km/h to 40km/h where it intersects with SWARM’s section of Gaffney-Murray.

⁉️Meanwhile DTP has stated via the previous Minister that 60km/h is ‘appropriate” for Murray Rd. This appears to contravene their own guidelines. Not least because Merri-bek Council deems the Elizabeth St end of Murray an ACTIVITY ST, qualifying it for 40km/h under the DTPguidelines. And the Gaffney St end is ear-marked by the State Government to be a KEY PEDESTRIAN STREET because it borders and intersects the COBURG ACTIVITY CENTRE.

⚠️Thank you to Michael from SWARM for putting together this map (Pic 1) which shows Murray Rd and Elizabeth St are (dangerous) 60km/h outliers among local arterials, all of which have at least some sections with current, DTP approved or under review, all day speed limit reductions.

💥It’s probably no coincidence that the second highest number of incidents recorded on the SWARM Incident Reporter are at the intersection of Murray and Elizabeth (Pic 2)

This dangerous Activity St zone includes and vulnerable road users, Barry Beckett Children’s Centre, , Cox Reserve Playground, Newlands shops, Pre-School, Maternal Child Health and Senior Citizens.

🙌🏼 A beautiful set of numbers!! 🚌🚲🚶🏻‍♀️
Well done to Coburg High School community for helping keep at least 1000 cars off local roads - twice a day!!
And of course, the 85% of students (well over 1000) travelling home from school by sustainable means are all vulnerable road users.

Well done also to CHS for advocating strongly for safer roads for these students to walk and ride on - including the very many who use or cross Murray Rd!

🎉🚌 A huge result yesterday for our 526 Bus Campaign (run also with Climate Action Merri-bek). The poor 526 bus service has long been part of our advocacy but the stand-alone campaign was established in October - with a win 6 months later!!!

The recently reinstated ‘cycling infrastructure’ is faring well…

This follows the extensive road resurfacing and repainting works that included NO SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS that we can see.
