Every year on Australia Day, our club usually does a walk along one of our local waterways, but this year we decided to go underground instead.
The new Metro Tunnel was opened late last year, and Public Transport Victoria has been offering free travel every weekend and on public holidays during December and January to promote it to the public.
The tunnel connects the Sunbury Line to the northwest and the Cranbourne and Pakenham Lines to the southeast, and has stations located at strategic locations in central Melbourne, such as the medical and educational precinct in Parkville, giving better access to these for both metropolitan and rural Victorians. There are also pedestrian interconnections between Flinders Street and Melbourne Central Stations so that travellers using the City Loop will have access too.
The trains are running in limited service at present, but from February 1 all trains on the Sunbury, Pakenham and Cranbourne Lines will pass through the Metro Tunnel.
We all met in Brunswick and caught a tram down to Parkville Station, travelling to Anzac Station, then back to Town Hall to enjoy a coffee at Brunetti's in Flinders Lane. After that, we caught a train to State Library before completing our round trip in this amazing new system.
Many thanks to Jo Connellan for arranging the tour and being our guide this morning!
