We’re proud to share that Second Stitch was a finalist for the Environmental Sustainability Award (in recognition of John Englart) at the Merri-bek Community Awards! Jen and Cat attended the awards earlier this week to celebrate alongside fellow nominees and recognise the incredible work happening across our community.

Our nomination recognised Second Stitch’s commitment to a circular fashion industry through clothing repairs, textile reuse and partnerships that help keep garments in use for longer. Beyond reducing textile waste, our work creates meaningful employment and skills development opportunities for women from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Congratulations to the award winner and all fellow nominees working towards a more sustainable and inclusive Merri-bek community!

This week is Ethical Clothing Australia Week, and this year’s theme is “all clothing is handmade”— a reminder to recognise the skilled people and human hands behind the clothes we wear.

At Second Stitch, we believe in buying nice, not twice.

As VICSEG New Futures social enterprise, Second Stitch provides alterations, mending and small-run production for local businesses and artists. We also work with production, alteration and donation partners to help extend the life of clothing and support more considered ways of making and buying.

Can you sew and spare a few hours to make a difference?

We’re looking for a sewing support volunteer to assist a student studying Apparel & Textiles at our Braybrook campus.

The support would be Mondays, 10am–2pm, with the potential for a similar opportunity on Wednesdays at our Coburg campus.

This could be a wonderful opportunity for a skilled home sewer, experienced maker or retiree who would love to share their knowledge, skills and passion for sewing with someone learning the craft.

Your time and skills could make a real difference in helping a student continue their studies.
