At our most recent Club night we had a fascinating and genuinely enjoyable presentation from Pete McGee.

Pete, an award-winning underwater photographer and member of the Underwater Research Group, shared insights into his work with UTS scientists and citizen scientists studying Sydney’s weedy seadragons. Following the 2022 storms and over 100 wash-ups along our coastline, the question is more urgent than ever: how many seadragons are there, where are they, and how can we help protect them?

We also got a glimpse into Timor-Leste, an emerging whale and diving hotspot where a third of the world’s cetacean species can be seen, as well as Pete’s incredible encounters with killer whales off Bremer Bay, WA. These apex predators have been observed hunting the largest whales in the ocean—an unforgettable and powerful insight into marine life.🐋

A big thank you to Pete for sharing his knowledge, experiences, and stunning imagery with us.👏

More than just concrete anchors—it’s about connection, conservation, and curiosity. 💙 We loved having the story of our nature trail shared on the Citizen Science Show. Huge shoutout to Sam Baxter and John Rowe for their passion and commitment to preserving the underwater beauty of our favourite bay.

Listen here:

In a quiet corner of Sydney’s coastline, a chain links more than just concrete anchors—it connects community, conservation, and curiosity.

Beneath the surface of Gordon’s Bay lies one of Australia’s most distinctive citizen-led marine projects: an underwater nature trail built not by institutions, but by passionate divers.

For Sam Baxter, the ocean has long been a place of fascination. Originally from the UK, Sam’s move to Australia was driven in part by the promise of clearer, warmer waters. After a career in IT, retirement opened the door to deeper involvement in diving and marine conservation.

Alongside him is John Rowe, whose connection to the water stretches back to childhood. From snorkelling in a country-town pool to discovering the writings of early diving pioneers, John’s lifelong passion would eventually anchor one of Sydney’s most enduring marine initiatives.

From past to present 🔧🌊

These photos capture a small but meaningful piece of the trail’s history. The first image shows the original laser-cut numbers we recovered during the 2020 upgrade—cleaned up, re-drilled, and kept as spares for future use. A nice way to preserve a bit of the trail’s legacy.

The second photo highlights one of the challenges we faced with earlier number plates. Over time, marine growth would often obscure the numbers, making navigation a bit tricky for divers.

Some of these pieces may even date back to the very early days of the trail—when ideas like adding extra drums were still being explored.

The current setup has come a long way. The drums we use today were introduced in 2017, followed by the updated numbering system in 2020, making the trail clearer, more durable, and easier to navigate underwater.

A reminder of how far things have evolved beneath the surface.
