River Lakes Coorong Action Group Inc RLCAG formed in 2006 to advocate for the wellbeing of the River Murray and communities around Lake Alexandrina, Lake Albert and the Coorong.

We acknowledge the Ngarrindjeri nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land, river and sea in this region. River Lakes and Coorong Action Group Incorporated
RLCAG is an independent community-based organisation which formed in 2006 to protect the region and people’s livelihoods from over-allocation upstream. The organisation incorporated in January 2007:
• to protect, conserve and enhance the b

iodiversity of the River Murray, Lakes and Coorong;
• to liaise with appropriate bodies over the management of the River Murray, Lakes Alexandrina and Albert and the Coorong, and their immediate surrounds; and
• to educate the community in River Ecology. RLCAG has a track record of engaging with Murray-Darling Basin matters though submissions, symposia, meetings and campaigns and has made some 25 submission regarding government inquiries and actions on environmental matters. Our focus is at once on our region and on the system as a whole. The lower Murray River, Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert and the Coorong are critical because this region is the canary in the mine. Rivers die from the Mouth up. If we’re OK, upstream is more likely to be OK. At the same time we are critically concerned with the health of the river system as a whole, with the fair allocation of water for all users and for the environment.

RLCAG attend RIVER PEOPLES FORUM, SWAN HILL
Being present upstream matters. What happens in one part of the river system is never isolated — it flows through landscapes, communities, wetlands, lakes, the Coorong and ultimately to the Murray Mouth. Staying informed, listening carefully, and sharing knowledge across state borders is essential if we are to understand the whole system and advocate for it properly.
The Forum was a powerful reminder that river health is not just a policy issue — it is a people issue. Grassroots voices matter deeply. Local communities, fishers, farmers, Traditional Owners, scientists, tourism operators, landholders and advocates all carry lived knowledge of the river in different ways.
By coming together, we strengthen the shared story of the Basin: one river system, many communities, and a responsibility to speak honestly, respectfully and urgently for its future.
Healthy rivers need connected communities — informed, united and willing to act.

The Federal Government’s latest water purchase from willing sellers brings progress towards the Basin Plan’s 450GL environmental water target to nearly 85% complete, a significant milestone in restoring the health of Australia’s largest river system.

The Murray-Darling Conservation Alliance welcomes this progress.

“This commitment is an important aspect of implementing the Basin Plan in full as agreed. Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt is doing precisely what the government committed to doing,” says MDCA Co-National Director Craig Wilkins.

Restoring environmental flows is fundamental to healthy rivers, thriving ecosystems and resilient Basin communities. The remaining commitments must now be delivered in full.

Because we can’t have food security without water security.

In many Aboriginal cultures, women have a special and distinct relationship to water, which is rooted in cultural beliefs, social practices and economic contexts as well as in women’s role in reproduction. Yet Aboriginal women have often been excluded from discussions and decisions about water management, with the result that their knowledge has not necessarily been brought to bear on the development of protocols and practices. Including these women’s views is critical if we hope to understand the spiritual, social, and cultural meanings as well as the economic and political importance of water quality and security. These perspectives, in turn, are essential for the formulation of appropriate and sustainable water management.
