Veterans helping veterans extends well beyond welfare and personal support. It also means backing each other in business.

Connecting Charities is an annual Brisbane event that brings together leaders from across the charitable sector, along with businesses that support the important work these organisations do in our community.

The event is the work of veteran Ricky Prout and his wife, Kristyn Prout, who have created an opportunity for charities, community leaders and businesses to connect, build relationships and explore ways they can work together.

Prominently featured at this year’s event were the unique staged floral displays created by veteran owned business Ruby Rose Blooms.

For us, there is something particularly special about seeing two businesses owned and operated by members of our Sub Branch connecting and supporting one another.

Veterans supporting veterans does not stop when someone is doing it tough. It can also mean making an introduction, using a veteran owned business, sharing an opportunity, opening a door or simply choosing to support someone who once wore the uniform alongside us.

That connection and camaraderie can continue long after service.

Connecting Charities and Ruby Rose Blooms are a great example of veterans continuing to support each other while making a positive contribution to the wider community.

Today we remember and honour the life and service of Lance Corporal Jared William MacKinney.

Lance Corporal MacKinney was serving with the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in Afghanistan when he was killed during an intense firefight with Taliban insurgents on 24 August 2010.

Born in Canberra, Jared joined the Army in 2002 and served with the Brisbane based 6 RAR. He had deployed to East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan, and was qualified as a Protected Mobility Vehicle commander and driver, Assault Pioneer and Sniper.

Jared was remembered as a loving husband and father, a treasured son and brother, and a warm, caring and selfless man. His family spoke of his devotion to them, his high personal standards and his deep commitment to service.

Lance Corporal MacKinney’s service and sacrifice remain part of Australia’s enduring remembrance of Afghanistan.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and mates today.
