In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, Clayfield Toombul RSL Sub Branch volunteers are selling badges in Brisbane C*D, Brisbane Domestic Airport and Doomben Racecourse to raise funds for veteran welfare.

This year, we’re also recognising our war animals, remembering the loyalty, courage and sacrifice of the animals that have served alongside Australians.

Stop for a chat and buy a badge, or support us online by purchasing a badge, choosing a virtual poppy or donating.

Virtual poppy purchases include a poppy graphic and certificate, while donations receive a certificate of appreciation.

Expressions of interest are now open for veterans and family members of veterans who would like to volunteer as representatives at overseas Anzac Day services held by DVA in 2027.

We welcome applications from people of diverse backgrounds, experiences and service histories.

Megan Banton was a volunteer at the Anzac Day service in Villers-Bretonneux, France, and shared the following about her experience:

"Volunteering at Villers-Bretonneux gave me a completely new appreciation for the impact of Australian service overseas. Being part of the team delivering these commemorations allowed me to contribute in a way that felt both meaningful and deeply personal. It reinforced the importance of preserving these stories for future generations."

If you would like to volunteer as a representative and assist DVA with commemorations in Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux, Sandakan, Hellfire Pass, Isurava or Singapore, applications for 2027 close on 8 November 2026.

Today, our Sub Branch invites veterans, members and the public to pause and tune in at 3.30 pm Brisbane time for the Australian War Memorial’s Last Post Ceremony, live from Canberra.

The ceremony commemorates 25 years since the commencement of Operation Slipper.

The Vale will be read, reciting the names of those who died as a result of their service to Australia in Afghanistan.

We remember them and their service.

The ceremony reflects on the human impact of war and may be distressing to some viewers. Viewer discretion is advised.

Lest we forget.

Today, on the 11th, we mark 25 years since the Afghanistan campaign began.

To our members who served in Afghanistan, today is for you. We remember your service, your sacrifice and the experiences you carry.

We honour the Australians who served, those who were wounded and those who did not return. We remember, too, the families who waited at home and the mates who stood beside them.

Twenty five years later, the people and events of that campaign are now part of our national story. Their service will always be remembered in its own right, and their sacrifice should never be taken for granted.

As we reflect today on Afghanistan, we also look ahead to 11 November, when we’ll pause together for Remembrance Day and remember the many more Australians who have served, and the countless who gave their lives.

From one 11th to the next, we carry remembrance forward, honouring service and sacrifice across generations.

Clayfield Toombul RSL Sub Branch member Rob Layton joined the Australian Army as an infantry soldier in 2006 and completed two operational tours of Afghanistan.

Rob first deployed in 2010 with 6 RAR as part of Mentoring Task Force One, before returning with 3 RAR as part of Mentoring Task Force Five.

For Rob, the memories of Afghanistan are complex. They include fear and loss, but also immense pride, purpose and the unbreakable bonds formed between those who depended upon each other every day.

On 11 October 2026, Rob will join more than 35,000 Australians whose service in Afghanistan and the Middle East Area of Operations will be recognised through AFGHANISTAN25.
