Such great news that WEN member Live Reptile Displays.com.au was able to give a home to this little beauty that was found in an area where crocodiles are not native to in Australia. Excellent news! WEN hopes to help more in this space in the future!!

Welcome to the Live Reptile Displays team, “Wally” the famous Wallsend crocodile.

Wally is a freshwater crocodile which was either an escapee or dumped pet, in the Iron Bark creek in Wallsend Newcastle.
It was spotted by locals, and was all over the media.
After two days work by the amazing team from the Australian Reptile Park, Wally was rescued, with Bill Collett performing an awesome dive into the creek, and coming up trumps, with the capture of the croc.

These actions 100% saved this crocodiles life.😊

The crocodile being so far from its native area naturally, would have never survived this far south as weather gets cooler.
The Reptile park did an amazing job caring for it after capture, but decided it wasn’t ideal to be its long term home, and releasing into the wild with no history of the crocodile was impossible, so authorities contacted us, knowing I am a current licensed crocodile keeper and exhibitor, based in Sydney, keeping Freshwater and Saltwater crocodiles, and asked if we’d take it in.

And of course we couldn’t say no.☺️
So keep an eye out for our future demonstrations, or book us in yourself, and you may be lucky enough to meet the famous Wally.👍🐊 www.livereptiledisplays.com.au

We are excited that WEN has a managed breeding program for the stunning Radiated Tortoise native to the island of Madagascar. We have several WEN members actively working on bringing a breeding population of these tortoises into the region. Stay tuned for more updates throughout 2026.

Australia has some incredible wildlife
Wilbur's Wildlife

Meet the northern spiny tailed gecko.

These prehistoric looking lizards are a gecko. That means they have no eyelids so will lick their eye to keep it clean.

Northern spiny tailed geckos come from shrubland in central and northern Australia.

When threatened they will lift their tail and spray foul smelling liquids at the threat. A bit like a tiny skunk 🦨

You can meet our gecko prickles at the Wilbur's Wildlife Discovery Centre.
