The Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Summer 2025-26

In summary:

▪ A warmer-than-average summer is likely in Victoria.

▪ An increased risk of fire is forecast for south-west, western,

central and north-central Victoria, as well as south-west

Gippsland for January-February.

▪ Despite current green growth, Victoria will likely rapidly transition

to a highly flammable condition in January.

For summer, an increased risk of fire is forecast for forest and heathy woodland, in areas including the far south-west, northern Otways, Mt Buangor State Park, Wombat State Forest and Central Highlands, the Mornington Peninsula and south-west Gippsland, as well as northcentral (including Kinglake and Yarra Ranges), and parts of Elidon during January and February 2026.

An increased risk of bushfire is expected for parts of the country this summer, with most areas expecting hotter than normal temperatures.

Nooding Thistle Receptacle Weevil

Have you seen this biocontrol on your property?
When you see it, take a photo and post on iNaturalist, it will then also be loaded onto the Atlas of Living Australia, then Scientists can track how successful the biocontrol program is.

Nodding thistle is a annual or biennial herb that grows throughout Australia infesting around 1000 hectares of land in the tablelands of NSW, ACT, VIC and TAS. When infesting pastures, nodding thistle can quickly reduce stock and productivity as animals avoid grazing nodding thistle, allowing it to spread and outcompete desirable pasture plants. The main reproductive method of nodding thistle is through dispersal of seed, which may remain viable for up to 20 years. 3 biocontrol agents have been released to combat nodding thistle in Australia.

Nodding thistle receptacle weevil Rhinocyllus conicus
Nodding thistle gall fly Urophora solstitialis
Nodding thistle crown weevil Trichosirocalus horridus

A bicontrol program for nodding thistle was commenced in 1985 to find suitable agents capable of controlling this w**d. The first release of the nodding thistle receptacle weevil occurred in 1988 in 3 regions of the NSW tablelands. However, due to the longer flowering season in Australia and poor synchronisation of adult weevil emergence with the onset of flower head production, establishment was variable. In 1991 the nodding thistle gall fly was released at multiple field sites. Subsequent observations found that the galls fly had established at all sites, however this population also struggled due to the poor synchronisation between adult emergence and flowered production, causing many flies to die before suitable buds formed. The most recent agent to be released in Australia is the nodding thistle crown weevil which was released in NSW in 1993. Unlike the two agents released previously, the crown weevil was recorded to cause significant reduction in seed production and severely reduce vigour even causing death in some nodding thistle populations. Currently the crown weevil is the most effective biocontrol agent established in Australia against nodding thistle.

AGM Meeting today 4pm 6329 Midland Hwy Clarendon. Interested new members welcome.
One of our projects for this past year has been to lobby for reinstating wide road access at the turning-in point into the Clarendon Cemetery after it was reduced by the new barrier installed during roadworks which restricts traffic.
Another project is changing the Give Way sign to a Stop sign at the intersection of the Midland Hwy & Clarendon - Lal Lal Road. Serious accidents keep occurring at the above intersection despite the new road works.

An option to have training for children for social tennis, organised by a person with WWC, if there is sufficient interest.
EOI are welcome regarding day and time availability.
