Bright yellow against a grey Valley sky, this is Saddleworth right now.

Canola season means the whole region turns gold, one of our favourite times of year to drive the back roads. If you’re out snapping your own photos, a quick reminder to enjoy the view from the roadside rather than heading into the paddocks. Those crops are somebody’s livelihood, and they still look pretty spectacular from the edge.

John Horrocks Cottage, Penwortham.

Built by pioneer and explorer John Ainsworth Horrocks shortly after his arrival in South Australia in 1839, this cottage is the oldest stone building north of Gawler. Horrocks went on to found the village of Penwortham, naming it after his hometown in Lancashire, England.

The cottage is now cared for by the Mt Horrocks Historical Society, who purchased it in 2001 with support from local wineries and traders. It’s open to the public on the first Sunday of each month, 2–4pm.
