๐Ÿ“ฑ HEADS UP: IMPORTANT CHANGES TO TEXT MESSAGES STARTING 1ST JULY! ๐Ÿ“ฑ

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a quick heads-up about a new update rolling out across all Australian mobile networks soon.

If you start getting text messages from an "Unverified" sender next month, here is what is going on:

WHATโ€™S CHANGING?
The Australian Government (through the ACMA) is introducing new rules to help stop fraudsters and scammers from impersonating legitimate businesses in our text messages.

HOW IT WORKS:
Usually, when a business texts you (like a bank, a delivery company, or your phone provider), their name appears at the top of the text, this is called a "Sender ID." Under the new rules, all businesses are now required to officially register their Sender IDs.
Starting 1st July, all mobile networks will check incoming texts against this registry.

WHAT DOES "UNVERIFIED" MEAN?
If a sender hasn't registered their name, or if a scammer is trying to fake a legitimate business name, the network will intercept it, and the message will be delivered from the name "Unverified".

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
๐Ÿ”น STAY ALERT: If you receive an "Unverified" text, treat it with extreme care. It might mean the sender is not legitimate.

๐Ÿ”น DON'T CLICK BLINDLY: As always, be incredibly careful about clicking any links in suspicious text messages.

๐Ÿ”น VERIFY INDEPENDENTLY: If you aren't sure if a text is real, don't reply to it. Instead, contact the company directly using their official website or phone number.

Feel free to share this with older family members or friends who might get confused by the new "Unverified" messages! Stay safe out there! ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

We absolutely love having placement students here at the Churchill Neighbourhood Centre! ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

As you might have noticed in some of our previous posts, our placement students bring so much life, fresh perspective, and energy to our team. Every year, we are thrilled to welcome a fantastic group of students at every stage of their educational journey.

We love supporting students from all walks of life, with placements ranging from:

Secondary School: Getting their first real taste of community work.

TAFE (Certificate III & Diploma): Gaining hands-on, practical experience in the community sector.

Undergraduate & Masterโ€™s Degrees: Honing their specialised skills and bringing wonderful new ideas to the table.

Doctoral Candidates: Applying their advanced knowledge to help support the people we serve.

Mentoring the next generation of community leaders and professionals is a huge part of the heart behind what we do here at the Centre. Honestly, we learn just as much from them as they do from us!

Next time you drop by the Churchill Neighbourhood Centre and see a new face learning the ropes, please give them a warm welcome and say hello! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ“ฃ Did you know? The Churchill Neighbourhood Centre Food Bank is officially one of the LARGEST food distributors in Victoria! ๐Ÿ†

Across our 4 food bank programmes, we proudly support the distribution 16 tonnes of food every month. Times are tough, but our community is tougher. Here is what we do each week:

๐Ÿ… Tuesdays: Free Food Hallway & Hamper Pick-ups
Every week, our hallway has almost a tonne of fresh fruit, veg, bread, and milk available completely for free! If you're in a position to give back, we have a money box and card donation point at the food, or you can donate online at churchill.org.au. Tuesday is also our scheduled hamper pick-up day.
Too many lemons on the tree? Feel free to share them here!

๐Ÿฒ Wednesdays from 10am: Community Cooking Sessions
Join us to learn how to meal prep! The meals cooked go directly to vulnerable community members who need a warm, home-cooked meal.

๐Ÿ“ Thursdays: Morwell Food Bank
We also run our Thursday food bank programme over at the Morwell complex.

๐Ÿ’ป Need to make a booking?
Book, manage, and reschedule your Tuesday or Thursday hampers online: churchill.org.au/foodbank

Important: Please read the booking rules carefully. Because we are volunteer-run, we lack the manpower to contact everyone individually. Bookings that do not comply will be automatically cancelled.

๐Ÿ™ A Massive THANK YOU!

WOW! What an incredible day! ๐Ÿ’›โ˜•๏ธ

Today, the Churchill Neighbourhood Centre hosted The Biggest Morning Tea, and we are absolutely thrilled to announce that together, we raised a little over $1,700 for cancer research! ๐ŸŽ‰

First, a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to our wonderful community for showing up in full force. We were literally overflowing, we had more bums than seats! Your generosity and support mean the absolute world to us.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we want to dedicate a massive, special shoutout to our phenomenal volunteers. You truly outdid yourselves today!

The food you prepared was absolutely amazing, and there was so much of it that people had to leave with doggie bags! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฅช

Thank you for the incredible work you put into today, and for everything you continue to do for our centre. We couldn't do it without you.

We hosted this event because cancer is a disease that touches everybody. Whether itโ€™s a personal battle or watching a friend or family member go through it, we all know the devastating impact it has. But seeing our community come together like this reminds us that there is hope, and together, we really can make a difference. ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

Thank you all again for your generosity, your appetites, and your big hearts!

๐Ÿ Local Alert: Snake Sightings are Spiking in Gippsland!

If it feels like youโ€™re seeing more snakes lately, youโ€™re not alone. Weโ€™ve seen a significant spike across the Latrobe Valley.
Whether itโ€™s in the garden, on local walking tracks, or near our waterways, our local snakes are out and about.

With snake activity on the rise, knowing the right first aid is critical. Around 3,000 Australians are bitten annually, and the high survival rate is thanks to one thing: fast, correct first aid.

๐Ÿ›‘ 7 Steps to Save a Life
1. Manage Danger: Ensure the snake is no longer nearby. Do NOT try to catch or kill it.
2. Stop & Call: Keep the victim completely still and call 000 immediately.
3. Remove Jewellery: Take off any rings or tight clothing before swelling starts.
4. Apply Pressure: Use a SMART bandage, wrapping from the extremity and moving up the limb. Leave fingers/toes exposed.
5. Splint & Mark: Immobilise the limb completely. Mark the bite site on the outside of the bandage.
6. Reassure: Keep the victim calm to slow the spread of venom.
7. Wait: Do not move the victim; stay put until emergency services arrive.

๐Ÿ“บ Watch the correct technique here: How to Treat a Snake Bite Video

๐Ÿšซ Myth Busting: Forget the Movies
โŒ DO NOT wash the bite (hospitals use the residue to identify the venom).
โŒ DO NOT cut or suck the wound.
โŒ DO NOT apply a tourniquet.
โŒ DO NOT give the victim food, alcohol, or medication.

The Golden Rule: Always assume the snake is venomous. Symptoms donโ€™t always show up immediatelyโ€”never "wait and see."

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Why Preparation Matters
Weโ€™ve been using Survival First Aid Kits here for years. They are our go-to because of their exceptional quality and how easy they are to use when every second counts.

Don't be caught without the right gear:
๐ŸŽ“ Full First Aid Courses: We run comprehensive courses 4 times a year. Visit churchill.org.au/first-aid for more info and to book your spot.
๐ŸŽ’ Snake Bite Kits: Get the same high-quality kits we use at survivalfirstaidkits.net.au.
๐Ÿ“ฑ iFirstAid App: Keep life-saving instructions on your phone at ifirstaid.com.au.

Please share this with your local friends and familyโ€”letโ€™s keep Gippsland safe this season.
