๐ฑ HEADS UP: IMPORTANT CHANGES TO TEXT MESSAGES STARTING 1ST JULY! ๐ฑ
Hey everyone, just wanted to share a quick heads-up about a new update rolling out across all Australian mobile networks soon.
If you start getting text messages from an "Unverified" sender next month, here is what is going on:
WHATโS CHANGING?
The Australian Government (through the ACMA) is introducing new rules to help stop fraudsters and scammers from impersonating legitimate businesses in our text messages.
HOW IT WORKS:
Usually, when a business texts you (like a bank, a delivery company, or your phone provider), their name appears at the top of the text, this is called a "Sender ID." Under the new rules, all businesses are now required to officially register their Sender IDs.
Starting 1st July, all mobile networks will check incoming texts against this registry.
WHAT DOES "UNVERIFIED" MEAN?
If a sender hasn't registered their name, or if a scammer is trying to fake a legitimate business name, the network will intercept it, and the message will be delivered from the name "Unverified".
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
๐น STAY ALERT: If you receive an "Unverified" text, treat it with extreme care. It might mean the sender is not legitimate.
๐น DON'T CLICK BLINDLY: As always, be incredibly careful about clicking any links in suspicious text messages.
๐น VERIFY INDEPENDENTLY: If you aren't sure if a text is real, don't reply to it. Instead, contact the company directly using their official website or phone number.
Feel free to share this with older family members or friends who might get confused by the new "Unverified" messages! Stay safe out there! ๐ก๏ธ
