A productive and forward looking Electrotechnology Roundtable with the NECA National Executive and senior leaders from across our industry.

Under the leadership of NECA National President Peter Beveridge, we were pleased to welcome Senator Dean Smith, Anthea Middleton PSO, Michael Wright from the ETU, Farokh Ghadially of Schneider Electric, Scott Gandy of Stowe Australia, our incoming CEO Stewart Joyce, and senior Government Relations representatives from NECA. The calibre of discussion reflected the significance of the challenges and opportunities ahead for the electrotechnology sector.

The purpose of the roundtable was clear. To rigorously analyse the national policy environment and determine NECA’s strategic policy positions for the coming years. From workforce capability and female participation, data centre innovations, competition policy, energy transition delivery and safety standards, the conversation was practical, candid and solutions focused.

Our sector employs hundreds of thousands of Australians and underpins the reliability, safety and modernisation of the national electricity system. Policy settings must reflect that reality. As the peak body for over 6,500 electrical and communications contracting businesses, NECA will continue to lead with evidence, integrity and a firm commitment to outcomes that strengthen industry, protect consumers and support a skilled, safe and diverse workforce.

Constructive engagement across employers, unions, manufacturers and policymakers is not optional. It is essential. This roundtable demonstrated what serious industry collaboration looks like.

Today, NECA appeared as a witness before the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into electric vehicle infrastructure.

Neil Roberts, Kent Johns, and Michael Weekes represented NECA, giving evidence on the practical realities of delivering safe, compliant and scalable EV charging infrastructure across Victoria.

We reinforced that policy ambition must be matched by regulatory certainty, strong technical standards and a skilled workforce. The EV transition will only succeed if safety, fair competition and consumer protection remain central, particularly in relation to network market conduct and connection frameworks.

NECA will continue to advocate for reforms that support electrical contractors, protect consumers and ensure Victoria’s EV infrastructure is delivered reliably and efficiently across metropolitan and regional communities.

Vale Wayne Hobson

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the sudden passing of Mr Wayne Hobson after a very brief illness.

Wayne has made an incredible contribution to NECA over many years, both nationally and at a Tasmanian branch level and will be sorely missed.

He was the immediate past president of the NECA Tasmania branch, a position he held for more than 10 years, and a recent member of the NECA National Council.

Many of you would have come across Wayne at national meetings, awards ceremonies, and NECA functions, he was a larger-than-life character who freely offered his time and advice to those who sought it out.

As a recognition of his service to the Electrotechnology sector, and as a 40+ year veteran of the Tasmanian Electrical sector Wayne was awarded Life Membership of NECA Tasmania at the 2025 NECA Tas Awards.

Our thoughts are with Wayne’s wife Sandra and his children.

The National Electrical and Communications Association has today announced the appointment of Stewart Joyce as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Joyce brings more than three decades of senior leadership experience across the electrical, communications, engineering and technical services sectors.

NECA National President Peter Beveridge said the appointment followed a rigorous national process and reflected the organisation’s focus on strong commercial leadership, industry credibility and strategic reform.

“Stewart is an outstanding appointment for NECA and for our members nationally. He has led large, complex electrical and technical services businesses through periods of growth, restructuring and change, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, training and workforce capability,” Mr Beveridge said.

Mr Joyce said it was a privilege to be appointed CEO of NECA and to lead an organisation with a proud history and a critical role in Australia’s energy, construction and communications future.

“NECA is the peak body for an industry that quite literally powers the nation. I am honoured to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer and to work with the Board, members and staff to strengthen NECA’s leadership, advocacy and service to industry,” Mr Joyce said.

Mr Joyce will commence in the role from the 16th March 2026.

NECA welcomes the Federal Government’s 7.2 billion dollar expansion of the Cheaper Home Batteries program. This is exactly the policy certainty NECA has pushed for on behalf of the electrical industry.

A new tiered support system from 1 May 2026 will keep the program sustainable and help households and small businesses choose the right sized battery system, delivered through the Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

Full details are available on the Government’s website at www.dcceew.gov.au/cheaper-home-batteries.

This is a strong budget commitment and a positive step for electrical contractors, apprentices and Australia’s clean energy future.
