What We Do
Relief work:
Aust Myanmar Mission Association runs campaigns to help the people of Myanmar when there is a major disaster. We have been involved in providing money to support the rebuilding of homes in the Irrawaddy district after severe floods and relief work for the previous floods in Chin State in 2006. As mentioned above, we are now engaged in raising funds for the current flood
affecting the north west of Myanmar. The Agape Centre:
The Agape Centre in Kalaymyo has a number of different programs under its' control. School and Kindergarten:
Agape currently operate a kindergarten, primary, middle and senior schools. There are currently 500 children at the school. Children’s home for orphaned and deserted children:
The children’s home began in 1995 because of concern for the growing number of children being left homeless from the death of parents or desertion. Unfortunately, untimely deaths are commonplace in Myanmar due to poor living conditions and constant health issues due to disease. The children’s home began in a private home which was outgrown very quickly. Currently there are 52 children. Other areas of the Agape Centre were required to be used until, in 2008 an Australian Organisation kindly donated the money to build a purpose built building. Since its' inception, 27 children have left the children’s home, most having completed high school and some progressing to university. They are now successfully integrated into the community and are respected members of society and are well sought after for employment. Child/Family Support Program:
Agape, in conjunction with the Aust Myanmar Mission Association run a child support program to encourage single parents to keep the family intact. This covers basic needs and also assists the children attending school. The parent is also encouraged to enter a self-help work program. Currently there are 12 children and families being sponsored. There are 17 children currently awaiting sponsorship. All sponsorship comes from groups or individuals within Australia. Community Projects:
The Aust Myanmar Mission Association has been involved in many community projects within the outlying areas of Chin State. So far wells have been dug, 4 kindergartens and community welfare centres have been built, self help programmes have been put in place in villages, a much needed bridge has been erected and many minor projects have been undertaken. All these projects have project managers and financials are managed by a qualified overseer and vetted by Aust Myanmar Mission in Australia. Donations have been forthcoming from businesses, Christian organisations, the Australian embassy within Myanmar and individuals.
