In 1973 the AHC formed in direct response to the widespread discrimination Aboriginal people experienced in the private rental market. The lack of affordable housing for Redfern’s increasing Aboriginal population and general racial discrimination in the private housing market resulted in a group squatting in empty terraces in Louis Street Redfern

The AHC has been a major influence in the Redfern community.

As NAIDOC Week 2026 comes to a close, we reflect on the spirit of connection, culture and community that makes The Block so special.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for NAIDOC on the Block to celebrate 50 Years of Deadly. It was a wonderful day filled with culture, laughter and connection, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.

A heartfelt thank you to NIAA, our performers, partners, supporters and volunteers for your generosity and support.

For 50 years, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the strength, resilience and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year, we're inviting our community to come together on The Block to celebrate 50 Years of Deadly through culture, connection and community.

Join us for a morning of storytelling, music, food and activities, including:

Building strong connections across communities and organisations is an important part of continuing the work we do at AHC, and plays an important role in creating meaningful change.

Recently, we proudly welcomed Vanessa from Tranby Engagement Hub at Uniting WA during her visit to Gadigal Country. During her visit, Vanessa met with Uncle Mick and Dom to learn more about the history of The Block, the ongoing work of the Aboriginal Housing Company, and the importance of community-led approaches to housing, culture and support services.

Thank you to Vanessa and Uniting WA for stopping by. We appreciate the opportunity to connect, yarn and share knowledge.

As we recognise National Reconciliation Week, opportunities to listen, learn and strengthen relationships across communities remain as important as ever.

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Rev. Jione Havea, a respected educator, minister and visitor to the Block, whose connection to Community will be remembered.

Earlier this year, Rev. Havea visited the gallery with students from the United States—continuing something he had done over many years by bringing students to the Block to experience and learn from Community firsthand.

He was passionate about ensuring others could see and understand our urban Community, always encouraging his students to listen, learn and connect.

He often shared how much he loved seeing the Aboriginal Flag flying over the Block as he passed by on the train—a simple but powerful symbol of strength and pride.

We extend our condolences to his family, students and all those whose lives he touched.

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of two strong and respected women, Aunty Nay (Aunty Naomi Mayers) and Aunty Ann Weldon. Their contributions to community will not be forgotten.

Aunty Nay played an important role in the early days of community-led services and the fight for civil rights, and was a founder of the Aboriginal Medical Service. She was part of a generation who stood strong during times many of us now only read about, helping lay the foundations for places like the Aboriginal Housing Company.

She always stayed connected, reaching out to understand what was happening on the ground and offering her support. From advocacy to the hands-on work behind early projects like Murawina, her contribution helped create opportunities that many still benefit from today.

We extend our condolences to her children, Joseph and Tamara.

Aunty Ann, a proud Wiradjuri woman, was a fierce advocate who never shied away from challenging government policies—especially in housing and child welfare. Her work and involvement across many organisations, including the Aboriginal Housing Company, Aboriginal Medical Service and Children’s Services (just to name a few), reflects her deep commitment to community.

She spoke up when it mattered and held people accountable, with strength and honesty that many respected.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband George, Yvonne, Paula, Nita and her grandchildren.

Aunty Nay and Aunty Ann’s strength, care and commitment to community will always be remembered.

Their legacy lives on.
