We've all seen the heatwaves affecting Europe, and as the seasons change, Australian summer is coming.

Here are some important things to know about heat and human health, courtesy of heat & health PHD candidate and 1 Million Women board member Mariela Powell Thomas. πŸ₯°

Australians’ support for EVs has grown, driven by growing recognition of fuel cost savings, according to findings in the latest Clean Energy Solutions Index 2026. πŸͺ™

Global events like fuel shortages are making Australians question the reliablity of fossil fuels.

Saving money on energy bills is the top reason Australians support home solar panels and batteries.

Even perceived contentious solutions, like transmission lines, are becoming more popular than you might think.

Support for climate solutions increases the more visible they become in our communities! 🌱

Do you think all cities should be like this one?

🌱

Andernach, Germany, has turned 86,000 square feet of land into thriving gardens! It provides food, strengthens communities, supports wildlife, and inspires a healthier relationship with nature.

The social initiative hires the long-term unemployed and refugees.

All citizens come together, no fences necessary, in the name of flourishing fruit and veggies!

The fragrant garden of free food remains a groundbreaking example of how cities can rise to modern challenges.

Imagine if all cities did this! πŸƒ

Human composting is legal in some US states and Germany.

Wherever you are around the world, you can reach out to your politicians and ask them to legalise it.

These instructions are tailored for residents of NSW, Australia, where a Natural Organic Reduction Bill is in state parliament.

🟒 NSW residents go to parliament.nsw.gov.au.

🟒 Find out who represents your state electorate in the Legislative Assembly & your Upper House member & how to contact them.

🟒 The legislation you are asking them to support is the Public Health Legislation Amendment (Natural Organic Reduction) Bill 2026.

🟒 Write a personal message stressing why the passing of this bill is important to you.

🟒 If you DON’T live in NSW and want human composting legalised, contact your local politician and ask them to create a bill!

This should help your understanding of the tricks companies use to get you, an ethical consumer, to purchase their products.

πŸ”΄ Vague terminology.

Terms that are broad, undefined and actually don’t mean anything ie. eco-friendly, β€˜all-natural’.

🟠 Hidden tradeoff.

The one sustainable aspect of the product is highlighted, and the environmentally detrimental aspects are hidden.

🟑 No proof.

No evidence given. None.

🟒 Irrelevance.

Highlighting a sustainability claim that is either irrelevant or legally required. eg. labeling a product β€œBPA-free” when that substance is already restricted in many markets.

πŸ”΅ The lesser of two evils.

The manufacturer compares the product to one that’s worse. It doesn’t mean it’s good.

🟣 Greenwashing by unsubstantiated affliation.

Implying third-party endorsements or certifications which are false.

⚫️ Fibbing.

Making deceptive environmental claims.

🟀 Greenwashing by acquisition.

Companies acquire environmentally-responsible brands, not to improve internal practices but to boost their public image

πŸ‘‰ Unfortunately, we as consumers must be vigilant, and push for reforms ending these practices!

This is the reality of energy in remote First Nations communities across Australia and Zenadth Kes (the Torres Strait Islands).

πŸ‘‰ It would be the last resort for most Australian households to be disconnected from power because they hadn’t paid their bills.

Yet 49 disconnections occur per year on average for households using prepaid power.

It is standard in regions with significant First Nations' communities for households to pay for power upfront, which automatically disconnects as soon as the credit expires.

And many prepayment power schemes don’t even warn customers when their credit is low.

As extreme weather rises, cutting households off from power, becomes life-threatening.

Temperatures above 40Β°C are associated with significantly increased energy insecurity and disconnections, using data from Australia’s Northern Territory.

This is the reality for Torres Strait Islands ShePowers leader, Barb Ibuai.

β€œOur communities deserve dignity, and our islands deserve the chance to cool from stressful heat relief, to breathe, and simply, to thrive," she said.

The Marlinja microgrid project proves communities can have energy independence!

The project is a First Nations’ community-owned and grid-connected solar microgrid.

A fixed daily credit is applied to household meters, proportional to energy produced by the microgrid, replicating the benefits of rooftop solar in social housing and prepayment scenarios.
