The High Court of Australia has just handed climate accountability a landmark victory!

Congratulations to the Hunter Valley community group Denman Aberdeen Muswellbrook Scone Healthy Environment Group (DAMSHEG) for winning the first climate case ever to be heard in the high court. 😮

This is a major step towards making governments and fossil fuel companies accountable for the climate harm caused by coal and gas. This judgement has huge implications for how fossil fuel project approvals consider and manage global emissions and local climate change.

Maidstone Borough Council in the UK is filling its potholes with material made from recycled clothing! The trial is an example of how innovation can help address environmental challenges.

Micro forests 101! 👇 Thanks Nature Makers director Anna Mezzetti!

🌱 The average size of a micro forest is a tennis court, but it can be smaller, or bigger.

🌲 At least 30 different indigenous plant species, with three to four planted per square meter creates the diversity of a micro forest!

🪴 Micro forests retain water. Once grown, it can be up to 10° cooler in one of these little forests than it is outside!

🪷 And just planting something can help create a healthy soil base!

🌳 Micro forests act as a buffer to reduce the severity of wind. And clean the air of pollutants!

🪰 Micro forests provide dense vegetation for insects and local native birds.

🫶 Our public spaces can be full of local indigenous plants and teeming with wildlife. You can get started in your own backyard or talk to your local council!

The EU just raised the bar.

Starting September 27, specific rules have been introduced to prevent consumers from being misled by product marketing!

This means environmental claims must be clear, specific and actually valid, and so must circularity aspects - businesses can no longer say their product will last longer than it does, prompt replacing the item earlier than necessary, suggest it can be repaired when it can't, or present an update as necessary when it's not.

The aim of these rules is to allow businesses to operate on a level playing field and enable consumers to choose products that are genuinely better for the environment, leading to more environmentally sustainable products... not just more greenwashing. 🌱

The International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on climate change confirmed that states owe duties under customary international law to prevent significant harm to the climate system.

So why are coal projects like Hunter Valley Operations still getting the green light? 🟢

Feminist climate activist, international human rights lawyer from Fiji, Kavita Naidu said while the ICJ specifically says that states need to do environmental impact assessment to assess climate harms from any projects, Australia actually revised its laws last year and climate is not a trigger for the environmental law.

"Conveniently, the colonial Australian legal system is designed in a way where these things fall through the gaps," she said.

"And a lot of us are wondering, when we know this is causing harm, why is it being legally approved, why are ministers approving projects that are causing the climate crisis?"
