Today the Chiltern Landcare Group hosted a demonstration event at the Chiltern Memorial Hall. In conjunction with Ovens Landcare Network and Victorian Rabbit Action Network, participants were given demonstrations on how to rabbit-proof a building followed by a hands-on session where everyone got a chance to do it themselves. A small section of the Caravan Park was also treated.

Participants really enjoyed the session and learned a lot - enough to go home and rabbit-proof their own place.

Check out the hall for examples of how it’s done. In coming weeks we’ll be organising to complete the job on both the hall and a larger section of the Caravan Park fence.

Once completed, the result will be the removal of a rabbit breeding area and therefore a reduction in local rabbit population. If this is replicated around town - and you can all do it yourself on your own property - then we are well on the way to overcoming the problem.

Rabbit Control Demonstration!

This Sunday we are running a demonstration on how to rabbit-proof a building, using the Memorial Hall as the demonstration site. This building currently has a large active rabbit warren under it, which is providing a haven for rabbits to breed which are then attacking the surrounding areas.

This is a practical demonstration that is worth attending. It is being facilitated by members of the Victorian Rabbit Action Network and will use best practice methods.

This week the Chiltern Landcare crew were busy on two projects.

The first one was held on Wednesday at the Chiltern Goods Shed. Landcare members along with four teachers and 34 students from Chiltern Primary School managed to plant 50 native shrubs and replaced four that had died from the 100 we planted in May. The students had a great time and it was an excellent learning experience. They took turns with planting, fitting a guard and then watering.

Today we were active again (no students this time) revegetating along an area of Black Dog Creek that we cleared of woody weeds a few months ago. We also had the whipper snippers out to tidy the area near Dillon’s Bridge, plus added a row of indigenous flowering shrubs along the roadside there that should look spectacular in a few years. Around 35 shrubs planted along the creek in all.
More work in the area will follow soon.

Recently we hosted an information day and town walk exploring ways of controlling our rabbit problem. Three experts from the Victorian Rabbit Action Network gave us all the information we need to take action, but there a few steps to take first.
Initially we will be developing a strategic plan that will lay out a town-wide framework for action. Importantly, this must be a whole-of-community coordinated approach - it’s not any one person’s problem or responsibility, it’s on all of us to fix.
We invite contributions from the local community to point out major rabbit hotspots and breeding sites which we will map to aid planning.
We’ll be running a demonstration on how to rabbit-proof buildings and yards on October 11 at the Community Hall.
The more of us that get involved, the more successful we will be.
Now is the time to help. All contributions are welcome.

Chiltern Landcare Group invites Chiltern locals to attend an engaging workshop on 23rd August 2026 run by the Victorian Rabbit Action Network.

This interactive information session will involve an introduction to rabbit biology and ecology, and an overview of best practice rabbit management for peri-urban environments.
The information session will be followed by a ‘township walk’ where a number of properties will be visited with a discussion around the different advice and strategies needed for these properties.

This workshop hopes to inspire a collaborative community approach to managing pest rabbits in the township of Chiltern.

Time: 10am - 1pm Cost: $5 per person.
Location: Chiltern Senior Citizens Hall, Conness Street, Chiltern, Victoria.

Today the Chiltern Landcare team were once again at work at the Suffolk Street Reserve. Works included chipping out Scotch Thistles, raking and tidying the walking paths and mowing all the lawns. It’s looking as pretty as a picture!

We are all sick of the rabbit problem, right? Now we are trying to do something about it.
We are running an information session at the Senior Citizens Hall on Saturday August 23, followed by a township walk.

With some very welcome light rain falling this morning, members of the Chiltern Landcare Group were hard at work at the Chiltern Goods Shed planting 100 plants across nine different species, to provide beautification as well as habitat for our local native wildlife.

The plants included some uncommon Acacias and Rhagodias, as well as Grevilleas, Callistemons, Melaleucas and more.

In a few months we will be back for further plantings which will be done in conjunction with the local primary schools as an educational activity.
