Just one minute from the Hume Highway, Posh Plonk On Main gives travellers a very good reason to take a break.

Found in Chiltern: big stories in a small town.

The Chiltern Athenaeum Museum has been part of the town since 1866, when the brick building served as council chambers, town hall and library reading rooms.

Today, its collection brings together Goldfields-era books, artworks, local memorabilia and stories connected with notable figures including Sir John McEwen, Alfred William Eustace and author Henry Handel Richardson.

It is a place to slow down, look closely and understand the people and events that shaped Chiltern beyond its heritage façades.

A country-town bakery stop is one of the simple pleasures of a day on the road, and Chiltern Bakery is right in the heart of town.

Call in for great bread, pastries, pies, cakes and coffee, then take your pick of a seat or continue your wander along Conness Street.

Owner Daniel bought the business in 2025 and says “I’ve worked as a baker for five years. I bought the business because I liked the small town; it has a long history and the people are friendly. I love it!”

Found in Chiltern: a house with a story to tell.

Built in 1870, Lake View House is a red-brick villa furnished in period style to recreate life in a prosperous gold-mining town.

It was once home to Ethel Florence Richardson, better known by her pen name Henry Handel Richardson, whose memories of Chiltern later appeared in The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Inside, the collection includes personal items such as the desk on which she wrote her first novel.

Lake View House is more than a National Trust Listed property. It offers a personal connection to an Australian writer and to the rooms, garden and lakeside setting that stayed with her. It is particularly beautiful to explore in spring, when the surrounding gardens bloom with vibrantly coloured flowers.

Built around 1895 and meticulously restored, the former worker's cottage retains original details including pressed-tin finishes, hardwood floors and a working fireplace, while providing the comforts needed for a relaxed stay. Found in Chiltern: a pharmacy frozen in time.

Dow’s Pharmacy was established in the mid-nineteenth century. The current building was constructed in 1868, but a pharmacy had been in operation on the site since 1859.

When the pharmacy closed in 1969, its medicines, photographic supplies, shop fittings and equipment were left in place, creating an unusually intact glimpse into an earlier era.

Look closely and you’ll find something interesting on every shelf, from original packaging to the tools of a working country dispensary.

Pair your visit with a slow walk through the surrounding heritage streets, or head onwards to Lake View House, another National Trust listed property in town.

Consider this your sign to book that winter weekend away you've hankering for.

Start your getaway with a coffee and something sweet from Didge’s Diner Chiltern before stepping back in time at the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum, filled with stories that helped shape the town.

Settle in for a long lunch and a glass of something special at Posh Plonk On Main, then spend the afternoon exploring the shops and artist studios along Conness and Main Streets, including Lisa Bishop studio and art store and Nat Ord Artist & Supplier.

Stay the night at Historic Wark Cottage, a beautifully restored 1895 worker's cottage with pressed tin ceilings, hardwood floors and a cosy fireplace that makes it very hard to leave.

Before heading home the next day, make one final stop at the Chiltern Bakery and grab a few pies for the road. You won't regret it.
