The EAAA Australian Elder Abuse Conference 2026 provided a valuable opportunity for learning, connection, and collaboration with professionals from across Australia who are committed to responding to and preventing elder abuse.
Led by our CEO, Kirstan Corben, the Better Place team joined delegates from across the country to explore innovative approaches, share insights, and strengthen our collective efforts to address elder abuse. We heard powerful lived experience stories, gained valuable knowledge from experts in the field, and returned with new ideas and approaches that will help shape and strengthen our work.
We were proud to present a poster showcasing research findings from the Centre for Better Relationships, focusing on tailoring elder abuse responses to the preferences and needs of older people.
One of the most moving sessions featured the lived experience of a Better Place client who courageously broke his silence to share his journey through elder abuse and the challenges of navigating fragmented support systems. The session was expertly moderated by Libby Blake, Senior Clinician, Elder Abuse Program. Our Elder Abuse Practitioner, Maureen Oluigbo, also shared her frontline experience, highlighting the types of cases presented, the challenges faced by clients, and the ways Better Place provides a supportive and person-centred response.
We were also delighted to showcase our work in the primary prevention of elder abuse. Vanessa Hill, Project Officer, presented practical strategies for embedding age-positive attitudes across communities and workplaces, highlighting the important work of Victoria's Elder Abuse Prevention Networks in creating safer, more inclusive communities for older people.
