On Tuesday 25th August we are delighted that Taya Abeykoon will be speaking to us about her experiences at the recent Rotary Youth Leadership program. We would love any previous RYLA graduates that we have helped over the years to come along and show support for Taya and her family. Please book in through Sandy Antonuccio on 0408119576 by Monday 24th August, especially if you would like to stay for dinner after our meeting, so that we can help the RSL cater for extended numbers. The meals are quite tasty at reasonable prices, with vegetarian options. We meet at 6:30pm for a 6:45 start at the Chelsea RSL in Thames Promenade, Chelsea. There is lots of onsite parking but the venue is also just a 2 minute walk from Chelsea railway station and the bus stop just near Chelsea railway station.

Chelsea Rotary has recently donated $2000 towards this event.

2026 Chelsea Art Show Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries from this year’s 49th Art Show were the Long Beach RSL Golf Group, the Chelsea Historical Society, the Edithvale CFA and the Special Olympics, with the major beneficiary being Pantry 5000.
We were delighted to be able to present each of our beneficiaries with their “cheques” at our recent meeting.
Thanks again to our sponsors Ray White Chelsea, Bendigo Bank Aspendale Gardens – Edithvale, Patterson River Golf Club, Lowe Living, Lowe Design and Build, and Humpy Co. These pictures from the meeting show our beneficiaries being presented their “cheques” with Ray White Chelse presenting the “cheque” to Pantry 5000 and the Edithvale CFA. Unfortunately the Chelsea Historical Society were unable to attend on the night.

Fiji School Painting expedition

In the Last 2 weeks of January 2026, Noel Jenkinson, Denise Carroll and Peter Washington from Chelsea Rotary with Peter’s son in law Stuart Murphy and Peter Brown’s son in law Julius, assisted former Chelsea Rotarian Peter Brown in painting a newly built school in Dreketi Village on the remote Fijian island of Vanua Leva.

Peter Brown, a retired Builder, moved to Fiji, joining the Rotary club of Taveuni island and has worked on many Fijian Rotary projects over the past 10 years. Finally completing the Dreketi School rebuild project has been a 4.5-year project after the original school was destroyed by a landslide 8 years ago.

Taveuni Island is the closest island with 2,000 inhabitants, an hour flight north from Nandi, which has an international airport. To get to the island of Dreketi Village, from Taveuni, is a 40-minute boat ride on a restive 40 horsepower boat. Dreketi Villiage has no power, cars, communications, no batteries, only a few solar panels and of the 200 inhabitants of which 50 are children who need the school.
Fijians excel at collaborative teamwork, like the rendering required. When it comes to individual work, they lose focus and tend to just walk off, leaving the job undone. Hence Pete’s call out for an international painting team.

Warm Winter Rugs Donation
This week Chelsea Rotary presented 16 hand knitted rugs to the Chelsea Community Support Centre to distribute to needy people.
These rugs have been hand knitted by Pat Otto who is 97 years old and obviously enjoys spending her time knitting.
Thank you also to Rotarian Shirley Johnson for sewing the squares together.
Both ladies have made many people happier and warmer this winter!

The results are in from this year's show - a 50% increase in sales and 507 visitors.
Thanks to all the artists, visitors and volunteers, this year's show has raised a significant amount of money that will be passed on to local charities - including this year's major beneficiary Pantry 5000.
