What does Charters Towers taste like on a plate?

Council is asking the question, and our first thought was a good old corned meat sandwich and let’s not discount the value of a really good one.

There’s the pickle, the mustard, the way the butter is spread just right, the bread choice, and whether you add something extra or keep it classic.

The humble corned meat sandwich deserves a place at the table, we reckon. What do you think Charters Towers on a plate tastes like?

A TASTE OF CHARTERS TOWERS

We need your help to answer a simple question: What does the Charters Towers Region taste like?

As part of the Local Government Association of Queensland's (LGAQ) 130th anniversary celebrations, a special community cookbook, A Shared Table, is being created to showcase the flavours, traditions and stories of communities from across Queensland.

Charters Towers Regional Council has been invited to submit one recipe that reflects our region, and with so many cultures, traditions and talented cooks in our community, we know there are plenty of delicious contenders.

Is it a recipe handed down through generations? A camp oven classic? Something simple made with love? Or a dish reserved for special occasions?

To enter:
📸 Email a photo of your finished dish ([email protected])
📝 Include the full recipe
❤️ Tell us the story behind it and why it represents the Charters Towers Region

We'll share the entries on our page, and the recipe with the most likes will be considered for submission to represent the Charters Towers Region in "A Shared Table".

The selected recipe will join submissions from local governments across Queensland and feature in a commemorative cookbook gifted to delegates attending this year's LGAQ Annual Conference in Cairns.

This is your chance to put the Charters Towers Region on the table... literally!

📅 Entries close Wednesday, 24 June 2026.

Take a closer look.....

These images have not been enhanced or altered. They are simply close-up photographs revealing the extraordinary detail and craftsmanship involved in creating three-dimensional mosaic art.

Every flower, leaf, teacup and ceramic element has been individually crafted and carefully positioned by hand. What appears from a distance to be a beautiful artwork becomes even more impressive when viewed up close.

If you've ever built something, made something, restored something or simply appreciate quality workmanship, you'll understand the skill required to create a piece like this.

Sometimes the closer you look, the more remarkable the work becomes. Currently on display in the Merry Mosaics Exhibition – Only Until 30 June at the Mike Carney Arts Centre, Charters Towers.

🎨 DID YOU KNOW?

One of North Queensland's biggest and most respected art prizes is held right here in our region each year.

The Percivals at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery attracts artists from across Australia, but it is also open to artists from Charters Towers and regional Queensland.

If you're heading to Townsville, it's worth popping in for a look. The exhibition features portraits, photography and animal artworks, with works ranging from highly realistic to wonderfully creative.

You don't need to be an artist to enjoy it. The stories, personalities and talent on display make for a fascinating visit.

Who knows? It might even inspire a local artist to enter next year.

Thank you to everyone who attended our first Book Club. Today, we had the pleasure of hosting author Laurence Murphy, who wrote Lady in Rags about Annie Bags. We had a wonderful conversation and enjoyed hearing from Laurie about his inspiration for the book and his thoughts on Annie. What a lovely morning with delicious freshly cooked damper, thanks to Rosemary's mum.

30/05/2026

We have more happening tomorrow. From 10 am we will be serving damper and tea and hosting a discussion with the author of Lady in Rags. Join us 😎
