Centrelink can feel like a maze when you're new to the system with different payments, different forms, different rules for different situations. Getting clear answers from someone who can sit with your questions makes a real difference.

That's why, we're running a Centrelink information session for the Congolese community in Newcastle. Bring your questions, hear from Centrelink directly, and meet others from the community at the same time.

πŸ“… Friday 5 June, 10:00am
πŸ“ Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre
πŸ“ž To register, call 02 4969 3399

Open to everyone from the Congolese community. Please share with family, friends and neighbours who might find this useful.

If you need an interpreter at the session, let us know when you register and we'll arrange one through TIS National.

πŸ’› VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: YUKARI MELLISH πŸ’›

Yukari noticed her son was growing up surrounded by English. He was thriving, but something was missing. His own language. His own culture. His own roots.
So she did what community builders do. She started something.
Nearly two years ago, Yukari began volunteering with our Playing Around the World playgroup on the Central Coast, showing up every week with craft, music, games, and stories, making sure every child walks in ready to play and every mum has a moment to breathe, connect, and share what it really feels like to raise a family in a new country.

Then she went further. She founded our Japanese Family Group, a space where children grow up knowing where they come from, even as they find their place here.
"It's important that children learn their culture and language from an early age," she says.
This is what volunteering at Mosaic looks like. Yukari, thank you for giving our children roots and wings at the same time. πŸ’›

And that's our five.
Libby. Kerrie. Liliana. Patricia. Yukari. Five volunteers across the Hunter, Central Coast, and New England. Different programs, different rhythms, the same quiet conviction, that showing up for someone else is worth doing, and worth doing again next week.
To them, and to every volunteer at Mosaic, thank you.

πŸ’› VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: PATRICIA LUCASSEN πŸ’›

Eight years ago, Patricia walked into our Armidale Homework Centre and sat down beside a child learning English. She has been coming back ever since.

Patricia is a teacher. She says life is all about relationships, and you can feel that the moment you watch her work. She doesn't just help the children with their reading and their homework. She knows their names, their stories, the cousin they live with, the language they speak at home, the book they finished last week. And when a child can't make it to the centre, sometimes Patricia goes to them β€” visiting at home, after school, so the learning doesn't stop.

She'll tell you, with a smile, that she learns from the children as much as they learn from her. Maybe more.
Patricia is also one of the centre's quietest, fiercest advocates. She knows what the Homework Centre means in Armidale β€” not just for English, but for confidence, friendship, and the feeling of belonging somewhere outside the classroom and outside the home. For our multicultural families in the New England region, it is one of the places where their children's worlds open up.

Patricia, thank you. Eight years of showing up, of building relationships one homework book at a time, of believing this centre matters. We believe it because you do. πŸ’›

🌟 Feel like joining Patricia? Our Homework and Learning Centre in Armidale is always looking for volunteers who want to walk alongside our kids as they find their feet in English. Find out more: https://www.mosaicmc.org.au/get-involved/
