Fight The Fire Ants

Fight The Fire Ants FIGHT THE FIRE ANTS aims to encourage everyone to Hunt For, Report, TREAT and DESTROY all Red Imported Fire Ant nests on their own property and other places.

Our Slogan is "KILL THEM, DON'T IGNORE THEM". This battle is serious. We need your help NOW. Hi, I'm Jane, I started this page to encourage my neighbours and friends to Fight Fire Ants! Recently retired, I also have time to volunteer treating Fire Ants in my community.

Fire ant bite inflicts lifelong EpiPen reliance THIS POST IS FROM THE FIRE ANT NEWSLETTER. THEIR STORY CAN BE VIEWED ON YOUTUBE; "SUBHA AND ALINA'S STORY"
For Subha and Alina, fire ants were just an occasional annoyance, until a frightening encounter turned their world upside down.

After being stung while taking out the rubbish bins, Subha felt itchy, developed a rash, and lost consciousness multiple times. Paramedics arrived just in time, administering a steroid injection and rushing him to hospital.

Now, he carries an EpiPen everywhere. ‘You don’t want an EpiPen in your life, trust me,’ he warns.

Doctors told Alina that Subha’s next sting could be even worse. ‘I didn’t know fire ants could be this dangerous. If I had, I would’ve done everything to prevent this,’ Alina says.

Severe allergic reactions to fire ant stings can be fatal. Don’t ignore them. If symptoms worsen, call an ambulance immediately.

GONE! Hi everyone, I'm back fighting fire ants again after a nice long break. I've been experimenting with a new approach. This is my theory: Just make them move, after 2 to 3 moves the nest is dead. This approach works for nests that are easy to monitor every day for about 4 days. How do you make them move? However you like. There are many ways, I use a little bit of granular Ant Killa. It is a cheap way, just using enough to make them move, as it uses far less chemical. Try it and please let me know how you go.

Bait not working? Baits are convenient and easy to use, and put less chemical into the environment than liquid if used wisely. Choose the right time of day, and the best method. Fire Ants do not forage when it is cold, rainy or very hot. I've read that mid to late afternoon on a sunny warm day is ideal. Ants will forage in the evenings when the days are very hot. Uptake of bait is very quick if the nest is gently disturbed to arouse the ants and the bait is applied on the nest and around it. Then they know it is there, and will find it before it is stolen by native ants. Don't expect 100 percent success. Wait a few weeks then follow up any pop ups or surviving nests with a different product, not a bait.

"Unsuccessful eradication in Australia may cost the economy billions in damages annually and, based on a Queensland government study, the estimated cost could reach $43 billion over 30 years." Quoted from Wikipedia (Red Imported Fire Ants)
We are in a war, and it seems the enemy is winning. I believe that IF we, the people were committed to doing our part, we could still win the war. That means taking action ourselves, as volunteers, not waiting for the government to do it. If you would like to volunteer in your area the Eradication Program will provide bait. Bait works well if the weather is warm and dry. I've read that you apply mid afternoon for best results. Then follow-up any survivors with pesticide.

You will probably not believe me, but this is a Fire Ant nest! It had no visible exit holes so I gave it a casual scratch with my spade and out poured dozens of Fire Ants. It's on a vacant block at Chambers Flat. Crazy hey!

Got Fire Ants in your yard? Got Fire Ants in your street? Don't know? Go for a walk and find out!! Search for mounds or soft fluffy looking patches of soil with no visible exit holes. When touched reddish colour ants swarm out to attack. They are of various sizes in the one nest, from about 2-6 mm. Get educated. The Fire Ant Documentary on You Tube is a great place to start.
