WIZO Victoria Co-President Hani Hanam-Papalia was honoured to join WIZO Australia Federal President Michelle Spiro at Admiralty House in Sydney for a special reception hosted by Governor-General Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC.

The evening marked the opening of NCJWA’s National Conference and the presentation of its inaugural Esther Awards.

Mazal tov to all the award recipients, including Victorian artist Nina Sanadze, who received the Esther Courage Award, and thank you to NCJWA for bringing together women and organisations from across Australia for this special occasion.

As the sun was soon to set on an unforgettable week, we entered the East Melbourne Synagogue. We took in its history and reflected on the sense of community we felt both within the walls of the shule and at our Annual Gala Appeal, which had brought us together just days earlier.

Sharing this special moment with our WIZO office family and our inspiring guest, Rawan Osman, President Danny Segal played the violin and set the tone as we prepared to enter Shabbat on a beautiful note.

This Shabbat we’re shining a light on the incredible girls of Central Shule who raised nearly $3,000 to help vulnerable girls in Israel celebrate their Bat Mitzvah with dignity.

From cake bakes and selling pre-loved books and toys on Facebook Marketplace, to one creative young fundraiser selling dog treats in the park after soccer. Their initiative and generosity were truly inspiring.

The girls received certificates from WIZO Victoria Co-President, Penny Goodman, in recognition of their wonderful achievement.

A huge congratulations to Jemima Montag on winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 10,000m race walk, setting a new Games record and personal best.

As someone who has shared her story with WIZO Victoria in the past, with her mum being part of our WIZO family, this achievement feels especially meaningful to celebrate.

Beyond Brave has a voice, and it’s Rawan Osman.

Born in Damascus, Syria, and raised in Lebanon, Rawan Osman grew up in a Hezbollah stronghold in the Bekaa Valley, where, as she has said, “Growing up, the only thing everybody hated was the Jews, slash Zionists, slash Israelis... we didn’t make a distinction between Jewish and Israeli.”

After moving to France and building a life in Europe, Rawan met Jewish people for the first time.
Her worldview began to change as she questioned what she had been taught, sought the truth and challenged decades of deeply ingrained prejudice.

Today, Rawan describes herself as a reformed antisemite, an Arab Zionist and is in the process of converting to Judaism.

We are proud to welcome internationally renowned activist, author and speaker Rawan Osman as our featured guest speaker at the WIZO Victoria Annual Gala.

Through courage, resilience and an unwavering commitment to speaking up, Rawan has inspired audiences around the world. In conversation with Marnie Perlstein , she’ll share her extraordinary journey and explore what it truly means to be Beyond Brave.
