A residential homestead and community centre with a focus on regenerative agriculture, natural building & communal living.

Open Field Co-living's key aims are:
- Housing: providing sustainable, stable, long-term, socially connected rental housing to 10-15 residents amidst a vibrant community centred around a solar passive, hempcrete co-living house.
- Homesteading: actively practicing sustainable living through a focus on producing local, organic food based on permaculture and regenerative agriculture principles
- Hosting: sharing land, resources and knowledge with aligned individuals and groups through working bees, workshops and events

Plots now available to rent at our community hobby farm here at Open Field, just 5kms from Castlemaine, VIC!

We have a a few folks unfortunately drop out so we've still got some plots available.

It's a great size for growing some of those larger slow growing crops that take up too much space for your home garden, like pumpkins, potatoes, corn or squash.

Plots available for the spring/summer season from October onwards. Minimum commitment of 6 months.

All at the very affordable price of just $12 per week.

The plot size of 25m² is generous and can provide a substantial vegie box each week to feed you and your people with. Big enough to grow 'set and forget' slow growing crops like potatoes, cabbage, onions and garlic.
Yes you can share a plot with someone if that feels too big!🥦🍉🥕🥦🍉🥕

The soil has been built up into raised beds and already been enriched with 10mm of organic compost and green manure.

Drip irrigation will be provided and is sourced from our natural on-site 25 megalitre dam.

Optional working bee days: Come on Fridays between 9am-12pm to garden alongside others, have a yarn and meet great people.

Kids welcome. Trampoline and swings to keep them occupied.

We perform perfection because we are afraid to be seen failing.
Afraid to be rejected.
Afraid that it will put people off and push them away.
But what if this keep us disconnected?

What if it has the opposite effect?
When people see you trying to be perfect on the outside it actually usually intimidates them instead of inspiring them. It's not relatable. It's not real.

Is it possible to be 'authentically' vulnerable on social media?

Or is it all just 'performative vulnerability' because its in a public forum?

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow".

Planting more trees and shrubs on this land has been immensely healing for me lately.

It's pretty hard to feel down and hopeless when your hands are in the earth, doing something simply good.

And the immense generosity of friends - and even total strangers - who have come to help me, has restored so much of my faith in the goodness of humans, which sadly I had lost for a while.

I find myself laughing again for the first time in a while.

How do we increase local food resilience, reduce our cost of living, and build social connection in our regional area?

How about a collaborative market garden or allotment farm.

Open Field will have plots available for rent to those needing lant starting soon in September for a 6 month Spring-Summer trial period.

Proposed regular working bee day will be Friday.

Still working out a few details, like, how much do you think is a reasonable cost for one 25m² plots?

I know a collaborative farm can work here in some format, because I've done it before!

Our "Grubs & Bubs" co-farming playgroup in 2024-25 built an incredible sense of connection & community for me.

At its peak, the 5 of us managing 4 x 25m² plots were taking home enough food each week to cover each of our family's needs for fresh veg.
