Lest We Forget.

Whatever you may be doing this week, we do hope that you will spare a moment to think about what was happening in the Middle East 85 years ago.

As the guns began firing, who would have thought that for the next 242 days the gallant diggers, occupying a ‘ring of steel’, would deny the advance of the previously undefeated and all-conquering Afrika Korps. The Rats of Tobruk, enduring the most punishing of conditions, never entertained the idea of retreat or surrender.

“The sands neither of the desert nor of time will obscure the splendid achievement of the men of Tobruk. Their real monument is their name, and their most honoured resting place is in the grateful hearts of their fellow men.” Chester Wilmot

We know that other organisations around Australia are commemorating the commencement of the siege in different ways and we wish them all the best with their events. For those closer to home, we would love to see you on Sunday at Tobruk House at 11.00.

An amazing way to remember... our thanks go to the Wando Vale Hall Committee for hosting us, for the Remembrance Day Service yesterday. It was great to see members of the Wando Vale community and RSL members taking the time to honour the men and women who have served this country... the service started with our RSL Treasurer and Master of Ceremonies Peter Green leading us through the proceedings, Welfare Officer Peter Gorman reading the names of the fallen from the Wando Vale community, and a touching speech from Warrant Officer Class 2 (Ret) Wayne Southern.

Wherever you were at 1100hrs, we hope you paused to remember the gallant men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Well what can we say... a massive thankyou to the entire group of Trakmaster Off Road Caravan Club for allowing us to host a traditional 'Soldier's Breakfast' on Sunday. It was great to meet so many people from all areas and provide a hot breakfast we hope you will remember. We would like to thank the following groups for lending us equipment and facilities to cater for the masses; Rotary Club of Casterton, Casterton Vice Regal Band, Kelpie Assoc., Sandford Mechanics Hall, Casterton Memorial Hospital, Casterton Fire Brigade, Albion Hotel. We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Richardson Butchery and Foodworks Casterton. Money raised from this, like all other fundraisers for us, goes into the ongoing renovations we are working towards at the clubrooms. It was a great day and the committee would like to thank all the RSL members who helped out leading up and on the day.
