Footbridge across the Richmond River.

Carrington Park in South Casino was dedicated as a public reserve on 18 January 1884. The Council received money from the government to help in the upkeep of parks and reserves and it was noted in 1886 that the Council had not used the money allocated to them in 1883.

Complaints were received from residents of Casino about the distance that they had to go to to get from the main part of town to the park so it was decided that a low-level footbridge was the answer.

In January 1888 the tender of A. Greentree and J. Wells was accepted for the construction for the sum of £76.13s 9d. The structure was 92 ft long and 5ft wide. The suspenders were firmly bolted into the rock in the bed of the river.

The Crossing Place

In late 1840 Henry Clay and George Stapleton had taken up some 30,000 acres of rich grazing land along the left bank of the Richmond River at Casino, with land stretching from the river bend west of the current railway bridge to 10 miles down the river past the crossing place and formed a station known as "Cassino".

A few hundred yards up from the present bridge, the river could be crossed by a rock bottomed ford and this is traditionally accepted as the spot they used as the crossing place.

A Memorial Cairn consisting of a portion of the rock from the bed of the river was erected at the site of the Crossing Place by the Casino and District Historical Society and was unveiled on 26 June 1967. This is located near the existing tennis courts.

We are proud to officially unveil the brand-new logo for the Casino Historical Museum!

Our rich local heritage isn't locked in the past—it’s the foundation of everything we are today. We wanted a fresh visual identity that directly honors the incredibly resilient, hard-working people who built Casino and District from the ground up.

The Stories in our new design brings together four iconic pillars of Casino’s early history:

🪓 The Cedar Tree: A tribute to the timber cutters who first put our region on the map.
🐂 The Bullock Plough: Honoring the pioneering agricultural grit that transformed our fertile soils and paved the way for us to become the beef capital.
🌊 The Richmond River: A representation of the lifeblood waterway that served as our very first highway for transport and trade.
🏠 The Early Settlers: Celebrating the families, local characters, and community builders whose stories we preserve inside our walls every day.

You will start seeing our new look roll out across our website and promotional materials in coming weeks.
