Adult Male Budgie found Bentleigh East 31/10/26

The people that found him did all the right things for him -
✅️ Got him out of the elements
✅️ Contained him in a small room (a toilet with the lid closed)
✅️ Purchased a bag of budgie seed & offered water (and donated it to LLRS)
✅️ Posted online
✅️ Contacted a rescue.

Despite being a busy looking business, they still did their best for this little guy and saved him from the dangers of being outside.

Now, who is missing their little friend? And what spooky themed name should we give him for now?

"I have two beautiful cockatiels and both talk, they can’t be separated, one is more tamed than the other. They both love head scratches. I’m looking for a new home as they are not getting the attention they deserve. The one was a rescue and we got him a friend.

They love watching YouTube of cockatiel videos during the day.

They have always been inside birds.

Two of our non-budgie birds have been adopted!

Tango the vibrant canary has gone to a home with another canary to chirp along with. And Barbie the Bourke Parrot is now living in a beautiful aviary and able to exercise her wild nature.

We have one (suspect male) canary looking for a home, and a few Zebra finches too! ✨️

Vet bill paid off in less than 24 hours, THANKS TO YOU 💙

We’ve had many donations come through since our post last night, and every single dollar is appreciated. A special thank you to the person who donated $500, which was almost enough to completely clear our vet account on its own!

We now have enough to replenish our emergency fund for future bills, too.

You guys come through for us time and time again, and we truly cannot thank you enough.

JubJub has fully recovered from surgery, and we’re keeping a very close eye on Logan, who still has a long way to go. We won’t have a full update on the babies for a couple of weeks, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for the best possible outcome.

Nestbox 2's hen, Truffula had a very distended crop, so we can now get her checked out too.

----------- The Breakdown -----------
2 weeks ago, a member of the public dropped off a nest box at an avian vet, with 4 babies and their parents, as well as a sick female and her mate (JubJub & Jabberwocky).

As you all know, JubJub had surgery to remove an egg and is now doing well. Unfortunately, the parents in the nest box turned out to be two hens, with mumma being Green Eggs and her friend, Ham. The girls had been raising the bubs really well, despite this being an uncommon occurrence of two hens co-parenting in the same nest box.

This was the result of colony breeding, and the original owner (the member of the public's dad) had passed, leaving the aviary behind.

The bubs had been growing well, with only a few minor hiccups where I needed to step in. On Monday, the second eldest chick (Blue 2) fell off the scales, and the vet believes there may be a pelvic injury. Blue 2 is now in a sling, being hand-raised and receiving pain relief. Unfortunately, the vet also found Macrorhabdus today, which means the whole nest box are likely carriers.

Then today, the same member of the public dropped off a basket containing another pair of adults and 4 chicks, with the youngest being less than 24 hours old. Unfortunately, she had not taken this box out since it was attached to the wall, and since they'd been removed from their nest box, the parents rejected the chicks, and their chances of survival are very low. We're trying, though, and hoping to save at least some of them.

And on top of all this, we have had 8 strays plus Logan Jnr was finally stable enough for a stitch up surgery today. His wound next to the leg is now sealed, and now we just wait for everything to scab over and hope that all goes well.

We are attending the Bird Lover’s Expo in 2 weekend's time, and hope to be able to continue to educate, raise funds and meet everyone there.

6 strays this past week! 🫢

Our two most recent arrivals are:

1. A male dilute yellowface found in Fountain Gate
2. A male yellow and green found in the C*D

The others include a sweet pied girl found in Box Hill, a show-type grey-green male handed into a vet in Essendon, a young blue male handed into a vet in Moorabbin, and an adult blue female handed into a vet in Flemington.

And Logan Jr (who was found last Saturday in Clyde) graduated to an actual cage instead of the ICU today, and is off for his vet check tomorrow 🙏

We do individual faecal testing, but when we have this many birds come in within a week, they combine their Chlamydia screening at the lab (but swab each bird individually). As if we get any positive results, the whole quarantine room would need to be treated anyways.

With a couple of more complicated intakes as well, vet bills can slowly drain our funds. The best way to help is to adopt if you are already looking to add a new family member. But if you'd like to contribute a "gold coin donation", we would much appreciate it 💙

Update on Logan Jnr 🥺

Logan Jnr has been unstable even on supportive treatment and immediate treatment for a suspect cat bite. He made it to vet today, but the news is not great.

The tissue around the injury to his lower right side is dying, and his little body is actively fighting a severe infection. The wound on his chest is about the size of a 5c coin, and not possible to close with surgery. And on top of all that he is still recovering from a ruptured air sac on his left side. We cannot be certain that he is unscathed internally too.

At this stage, the only thing we can do is to keep trying with antibiotics and pain relief, and supporting him with feeds or fluids as needed. The wounds are too big to surgically close, and he is too unstable to do any diagnostics to check for organ damage.

There is a chance that he may not recover from this, and if the damage continues to spread, we won't let him suffer.

Fingers crossed for little Logan Jnr, and perhaps his owner may see his post 💙
