When we turn to negative coping strategies when dealing with a stressful event, we are actually creating powerful associations in the brain, and from these associations we develop solutions to our problem.

For example, you had a tough day at the office, you get home and crack a bottle of wine and after a few glasses you feel less stressed. The association has been made:

More wine = Less stress

Although these solutions may provide temporary relief, they actually decrease your ability to deal with your problems and can add more problems to your life.

This is why finding positive coping strategies is so important when dealing with stressful times in your life.
