💧 Flood Watch and Act - PREPARE FOR ISOLATION - GASCOYNE RIVER 💧

Please note changes to the flood advice which is now a Watch and Act. People need to prepare for isolation.
⚠ A Flood Watch and Act is in place for people in GASCOYNE RIVER catchment.
⚠ You need to prepare for isolation as flooding is expected.
There is a possible threat to lives and homes due to dangerous, widespread flooding.
⚠ Water will be fast flowing and levels will rise quickly.
❗ WHAT TO DO ❗
- Never walk, swim or play in floodwaters as they are dangerous.
- Watch for changes in water levels so you are ready to leave if it becomes safe to do so.
- Finalise your emergency kit. It should include enough canned food and water to last for five to seven days, as well as clothing, important documents such as identification and insurance papers, medication, cash and a battery-operated radio to listen to warnings.
- Secure loose objects and outdoor equipment where possible.
- To help protect you from debris in the water and mosquito-borne risks, make sure everyone in your family is wearing strong shoes like sneakers or boots and suitable long, loose fitting clothing.
- Follow directions from emergency services personnel.
- If you find it hard to move quickly, you should leave now for a safer place. This may be with family and friends away from the area.
- If you are visiting the area, leave now.
- Review your plan and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do. If you do not have a plan, make one now on Emergency WA emergency.wa.gov.au/plan or in the Emergency WA app.

● Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
● Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
● Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.
● Check the ABC and local media for updates. The situation can change quickly, so stay informed.

💧 Flood Advice - THREAT IS REDUCED - CARNARVON TOWNSITE (GASCOYNE RIVER) 💧

Please note under Road closures and Conditions. Stagnant flood water remains in the area and roads remain closed.
⚠ The immediate danger has passed and the threat to lives and homes is reduced.
❗ WHAT TO DO ❗
- If you need to go outside be careful of fallen powerlines or trees, broken water and sewerage lines, loose roof sheeting and other materials.
- Do not turn on power or gas equipment until they have been professionally tested. If water went above power points have the house checked by an electrician before turning the power back on.
- Clean and dry out the building as soon as you can.
- Use a torch when entering a building, never use matches or cigarette lighters as they could start a fire if there is a gas leak.
- To protect you from debris and mosquito-borne risks, wear long sleeved clothing and closed-in shoes like sneakers or boots.
- Never walk, swim or play in floodwaters as they are dangerous.
- If you do not have a plan, make one now on Emergency WA emergency.wa.gov.au/plan, or in the Emergency WA app to stay safe in future emergencies.
If driving:
- Roads and bridges may have been damaged so exercise caution when driving in the area.
- Obey road closure signs and do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. Take care on gravel and unsealed roads as they may be slippery and muddy, and you could get bogged.
💧 FLOOD DETAILS 💧
At 8:45m on Tuesday 31 March 2026, the Bureau of Meteorology advised River levels are elevated and easing across the Gascoyne and Lyons River catchments following heavy rainfall associated with Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle over the weekend.
While further flooding is not expected to develop, elevated river and creek levels, areas of localised flooding and overland inundation are likely to continue over the next few days.
Roads may be affected. Check road conditions before travelling.
No significant rainfall is forecast over the Gascoyne River catchment in the next few days.
Lyons River:
Flooding has eased along the Lyons River.
Gascoyne River downstream of Jimba:
Minor flooding has eased along the Gascoyne River downstream of Jimba.
The Gascoyne River at Nine Mile Bridge is currently at 2.91 m and falling, below the minor flood level. The Gascoyne River at Nine Mile Bridge is expected to remain below the minor flood level (5.50 m).
🚧 ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONS 🚧
Main Roads WA are currently undertaking road network inspections.
Obey road closure signage and do not enter floodwaters as it is dangerous. Please exercise caution and drive to conditions.
Be alert and watch for hazards on the road including stray cattle and debris.
Please also note there is still stagnant flood water in the area and across roads. Roads remain closed.
A number of roads remain closed including:
- Burkett Road from Minilya Exmouth Road intersection to North West Coastal Highway.
- Coral Bay Road from Minilya Exmouth Road intersection to Coral Bay.
- Minilya Exmouth Road at North West Coastal Highway to Exmouth.
- North West Coastal Highway from Blowholes Road to Nanutarra Roadhouse.
- North West Coastal Highway north bound from Shark Bay Road to Carnarvon.
The following roads have reopened:
- North West Coastal Highway south bound from Shark Bay Road to Carnarvon.
Travellers should reconsider travel plans.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully. Road information may also be available from Main Roads WA by visiting the Main Roads Travel Map, calling 138 138 or by contacting your Local Government Authority.
