There’s a lot happening as we push for reproductive health leave for all workers.

HSU National Senior Assistant Secretary Kate Marshall recently spoke to 7News about why reproductive health leave matters. Watch the report below.

In May, Kate also gave evidence at the House of Representatives National Employment Standards Inquiry hearing in Canberra. We’re calling for a consistent 12 days of paid reproductive health leave to be included in the National Employment Standards for all workers.

Kate shared members’ experiences with reproductive health and highlighted HSU’s extensive work in developing workplace research and policy on the benefits of reproductive health leave and flexible working arrangements. Read our written submission to the NES inquiry at the link in the comments below.

With momentum building, now’s the time to support the campaign. Learn more and sign the petition at: reproductivehealthleave.com.au

The Fair Work Commission has announced a 4.75% increase to Award pay rates – delivering vital cost-of-living relief for our award-reliant members in aged care, disability and health.

Union members fought for pay rises to keep up with rising living costs. Surging inflation has hit our members especially hard, with little option to work from home or reduce travel costs.

After years of real wage cuts, this decision is an important step toward ensuring Award-reliant workers are not going backwards.

Increases take effect from 1 July 2026. For more information about how this affects you, please contact your local branch: hsu.net.au/branches

“Too many of my colleagues were coming through with stories that they were being told to forgo patient care for KPIs. It’s not the way it should be. Patients should always come first.”

Shereen and Rory share why they joined the union – and how, by coming together with optometrists across the country, they’re working to create lasting change for the profession.

We're in the Fair Work Commission fighting for better pay and conditions for members working sleepovers.

A sleepover is when a worker is required to sleep overnight at the home of a client they are responsible for.

More than 1,000 HSU members took part in a national survey. This week, we filed those results in the Commission.

Swipe through to see what workers are experiencing and what we’re fighting to change.

Optometry is changing and many optometrists can feel it.

Shorter consultations. Sales KPIs creeping into clinical decisions. Growing pressure to practise faster, not better.

Yet optometrists remain highly trained, registered health professionals with serious responsibilities to their patients.

Focus on Optometry is the Health Services Union’s new national campaign bringing optometrists together to push for recognition, respect and reform – and to protect patient care.

Yesterday’s Budget included key reforms across aged care, disability and health. But big gaps and serious questions remain.

We’re calling for:
-Aged care worker registration within 12 months, not 2 years.
-Transparent, genuinely co-designed NDIS reform.
-Real investment in our health, care and support workforces to meet rising demand.

HSU members and the people they support can’t afford delays or uncertainty.

Today is International Workers’ Memorial Day and World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

Our legal partner Slater and Gordon Lawyers has shared some sobering facts about just how common workplace injuries still are. Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community affected.

This year’s focus on psychological injury is a powerful reminder that harm at work isn’t only physical. Too many of our members are overworked and undervalued.

We’ll continue to push for ongoing improvements to safe, healthy and respectful workplaces for all.

The government’s NDIS reform announcement marks a genuine turning point for the Scheme. We commend the government for taking an important step in the right direction to drive out rogue providers while delivering a fairer funding model for participants and workers.

A sustainable NDIS depends on quality providers, properly valued workers, and funding that accounts for the complexity of participants’ needs. We’ll keep engaging with government on the design and implementation of the reforms. Watch this space.
