This weekend marked the anniversary of the historic women's general strike in Iceland. In 1975 - organised by feminist groups and backed by unions - 90% of the country's women went on strike for equality with men.

1 year after the huge success of the strike, the government bought in gender equality laws and 51 years later, Iceland now has the lowest gender inequality in the world.

What benefits women, benefits the whole community. Gender equality is a win-win 🙌

Carolyn and hundreds of other community and social workers rallied today because their wages are so low that they can barely afford groceries.

Some housing workers are even forced to access the same services they provide to others. These workers are predominantly women in the lowest paid job.

They support people facing some of life's toughest challenges, from addiction and mental health issues to seeking asylum in Australia without support networks. Their work is demanding, emotionally draining and essential to our communities.
They deserve to be respected and paid fairly for the work they do!

Full solidarity with our ASU comrades and all the workers fighting for better wages and conditions. ✊

Menopause is much more than hot flushes and mood swings.

The average age that people who menstruate reach natural menopause in Australia is 51, however some research suggests perimenopause can begin as early as your mid-thirties.

To help address the gender pay gap, reduce reproductive health stigma, support workers’ health and wellbeing, and create more inclusive workplaces across the country, workers need access to paid reproductive health leave.

Paid leave and flexible work options enable workers to access preventative health care, increases our wellbeing, improves women’s workforce participation and our economic security.

Not everyone can work from home. But when those who can are given the option, the whole community wins: less money spent on commuting, more time with family, less traffic for the workers who need to be on the road.

While Merri-bek Council CEOs and senior leaders have seen their pay go up, council workers’ wages haven’t moved in years despite rising costs of living.

SHAME!

Today, hundreds of unionists, council workers and community members gathered in front of Coburg Library to demand fair pay. These workers show up for us every single day.

Many of them are women in some of the lowest paid roles in the council: home carers, library staff, aged care workers. When council work is undervalued, it’s women who pay the price.

Let’s keep showing up for them! Solidarity with Australian Services Union - Vic/Tas Branch members!
