Environmental Justice Australia

Environmental Justice Australia We're a public interest legal organisation for a radically better world. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the communities we serve.

Together we run game-changing court cases, high-stakes legal interventions and bold advocacy campaigns. Authorised by Nicola Rivers and Elizabeth McKinnon, EJA, Level 3, 60 Leicester St, Carlton, Vic, 3053. Our environment is under threat from big business and hostile governments. Around the country, hard-won legal protections that safeguard our clean air and water are being wound back and torn up

. Environmental Justice Australia are lawyers and we use our legal skills and expertise to protect our environment. We go to court to close toxic waste dumps, protect habitat, and defend your rights to clean air and clean water. We fight to change the law when it isn’t working to protect our communities and the environments where they live.

Australian legal history has just been made.

For the first time, a United Nations Special Rapporteur has successfully intervened in an Australian legal case.

The decision indicates that international law is relevant to fossil fuel projects on Australian soil.

Our client, Environment Centre NT is challenging the federal Environment Minister’s decision not to assess plans to bulldoze almost 3,000 hectares of tropical savanna at Claravale Station and Farm.

They say these plans point to a deforestation crisis unfolding across the Territory – with bulldozers rolling in while the Government looks away.

“We believe Australia’s Environment Minister has failed to do his job when he greenlit one of the largest deforestation proposals we’ve seen in the NT.

The Territory is home to some of Australia’s best nature – iconic cycads, sweeping savanna woodlands, turquoise hot springs and a diversity of birdlife not seen anywhere else in Australia, but for too long, the NT has been a lawless place when it comes to environmental protection.”

Just 48 hours left to have your say.

Australia’s new national environment laws need strong standards – but right now, one of the most important standards is not up to scratch.

Here’s why it matters:

1. This standard sets the benchmark.
It helps decide what projects can be approved under reformed nature laws – and what can’t. A strong standard means stronger protections. A weak standard risks dragging us almost back to square one.

2. It needs to do more heavy lifting.
With so much discretion built into other parts of the law, getting this standard right is even more important – especially when enforcement could be challenging.

3. It only takes 10 minutes.
We’ve put everything you need to have your say on our website.

Can you spare 10 minutes for nature today? https://envirojustice.org.au/this-is-make-or-break-have-your-say-on-the-mnes-standard/

Don’t sleep on this.

Australia’s new national environment laws need strong standards – that’s meant to be the whole point.

But arguably the most important one is out for final consultation, and right now, it’s not up to scratch.

Instead of pushing decision-makers to assess damaging projects against clear environmental outcomes, the draft standard leans on weak, vague principles.

That leaves too much room for nature to lose.
