Hooded Plover

Hooded Plover This is the official page of BirdLife Australia's Hooded Plover Recovery Project which began in 2006, focusing on Research, Education and On-ground Actions

BirdLife Australia's recovery project for the Hooded Plover began in 2006 with the aim of improving breeding success of the Hooded Plover and protecting important habitat. The project is multi-faceted, coordinates many partner organisations and established Friends of the Hooded Plover groups across Victoria and South Australia to monitor and protect breeding pairs. In collaboration with universiti

es such as Deakin University, we carry out research to inform the direction of the program and fill critical knowledge gaps. We have a major education program with school incursions and community awareness raising events and targeted educational materials. We also ensure that land managers and volunteers who participate in recovery actions and monitoring are trained and equipped with specialist knowledge and skills, to ensure our interventions assist the species and do not add to their woes. We are always looking for more volunteers to assist this species as we have a big task ahead of us to protect and understand them, as well as to bring the community along in caring for this amazing coastal dependent shorebird.

'Hoodies' are an indicator of healthy coasts and a 'flagship' for raising awareness about the needs of other shorebirds and seabirds dependent on Australia's amazing and diverse coastal habitats. They can be brought back from the brink of extinction through simple changes in the way we visit the beach. Every individual can make a big difference!

Earlier this month our fantastic Beach‑nesting Birds Network in the Margaret River region came together to learn, connect, and reflect on the breeding season just gone. After recording no Hooded Plover fledglings last season, it was incredibly uplifting to celebrate the 10 FLEDGLINGS this season - a huge achievement and a real testament to what can be achieved when passionate people come together with a shared goal, clear communication, and boots‑on‑the‑ground dedication.

We were also fortunate to hear from Kirrily Hastings, who shared insights into the incredible research she is conducting locally to help close key knowledge gaps for our western Hooded Plovers.

A massive thank you to our incredibly dedicated volunteers, land managers, and partner organisations who have put in so much time, care, and commitment throughout the season. Your efforts on the ground truly make a difference!

This network is really gaining momentum, and it’s exciting to see such strong collaboration translating into real conservation outcomes. We can’t wait to build on this success and keep working together to give these special birds the best possible chance next season 💙

This project is supported by funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program.

BirdLife Australia and National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia’s volunteer Roslyn Shirlaw presents the inspiring work herself and other dedicated volunteers are doing in the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula in collaboration with U3A South Coast. Volunteers created a Beach-nesting Birds Course in 2023 for retirees and it was a success! Since then, they have expanded resources to include more species and conservation topics. How good is that!

Day 2 of the 10th National Beach-nesting Birds Conference. First up, BirdLife Australia’s Kasun tells us about the trials to use timber and galvanised steel sign posts in the intertidal zone hoping these would last and warn people about chicks in the area of the beach where they forage most of the time.

Ruth Cope from Adelaide University presented very exciting and promising results from the first ever GPS tracking of Australian Fairy Tern, a threatened seabird that weighs ~ 70 grams and nests on the open ground. They were able to track adults and juveniles and identified roosting and foraging areas in the Coorong and movements to SE SA.
