That's 3 days at Parliament done and dusted!

Our incredible HACSU social worker and occupational therapist delegates have completed their final day of speaking with politicians about the importance of same job, same pay in public mental health.

A huge thank you to Kate, Madeline, Hilarie, Rachael, Lisa and Karen who spoke so passionately for the cause.

Over the past 3 days, 17 HACSU social workers and occupational therapists spoke with 52 MPs about the crisis facing their disciplines. Thanks to those MP’s for listening to what our members had to say.

It was great to see everyone advocating so proudly for Allied Health. We won't stop fighting until our members are recognised for the skilled and professional workforce that they are!

Aaand that’s a wrap of day #2 with HACSU Allied Health members at Parliament. Social workers and occupational health workers took it by storm once again.

HACSU members are leaving no stone unturned to highlight the unfair wages and conditions present in the public mental health system.

Thank you so much to Lee, Kirsty, Zoe, Mathilda and Brenton ✊ We’ll pick it all up again tomorrow!

HACSU social work and occupational therapists are spending 3 days meeting with over 50 MPs to discuss the urgent need for allied health pay parity in public mental health.

A huge thank you to our day 1 delegates - Ben, Jason, Clare, Lisa, Courtney and Lisa who stayed at Parliament well into the evening to make sure as many MPs as possible understood the importance of parity for the workforce, consumers, carers and their families.

Even when we’re out on the streets, we’re also working hard behind the scenes to make sure our members are at the forefront of these crucial conversations. HACSU will never stop fighting for pay parity for social workers and occupational therapists!

As Victoria’s specialist union for Mental Health – we know that over 75% of suicides in Australia are male. This week, HACSU are encouraging all men to stop delaying appointments and ignoring potential symptoms.

Doctors can help with more than just physical health – you don’t need a “big problem” in order to see a GP.

Today we stood proudly for Allied Health.

Today we stood in solidarity with our HSU siblings in VAHPA & MSAV - shoulder to shoulder with Allied Health Professionals, Psychologists, Medical Scientists, Pharmacists and more ✊🧑‍⚕️👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🐕

Healthcare workers are essential - and together we unite our voices to demand the fair wages and conditions that we deserve as professional carers in our community. We will not be silenced until we are respected, recognised for our worth and finally heard!! 🗣️📢‼️

Disability care provider Scope is selling their buses and ending their transport service.

This will have drastic consequences for Michelle, Debra, and thousands of other people with disability in Victoria – no longer able to visit family, access community activities, or attend vital medical appointments.

Sniffer dogs in mental health units are NOT a long term solution.

People deserve safe, dignified and evidence-based treatment, care and support. Instead of resorting to restrictive measures, the Victorian Government must urgently invest in staffing, supports and quality Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol services for our communities.

HACSU State Secretary Paul Healey appeared in The Age recently to comment on the issue. “The reality is the public mental health system is in dire need of ratios and staffing profiles for all disciplines within wards and community teams to give us more tools to better manage the situation.”

After YEARS of pressure and campaigning from HACSU members, the HSU, and our comrades at other unions, the Fair Work Commission have finally acted to fix the SCHADS Award!

✅ They're closing a loophole that was seeing disability support workers being misclassified and underpaid. This is a big step forward in the fight against wage theft in the NDIS!

✅ They're removing Level 1 for Disability Support Workers – lifting those workers up to Level 2 with wage increases of up to 27% from 1 October 2027.

✅ Disability Home Care Workers are getting a massive 27% wage increase from 1 October 2026 – to match increases awarded to Aged Care Home Care Workers.

This is union power in action! 💥✊

In 2021, the State Government promised to deliver 2,000 social housing dwellings as part of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

Today, over 1,700 are still to be delivered.

Our services are overrun and with a system discharging people into homelessness, vulnerable Victorians are being set up to fail.

Paul Healey appeared on ABC news to discuss how this vicious cycle impacts both mental health workers and those to whom we have a duty of care.

"The other day I had a member describe that they saw a note saying a person was discharged to a safe park, which meant they were in a garden somewhere in the community that was deemed safe.”
