Earthwatch Australia

Earthwatch Australia Earthwatch is a global not-for-profit organisation that empowers people to save the natural world. Earthwatch is an international environmental charity.

We create knowledge and inspire action through hands-on projects and programs to keep us ahead of climate change, save the reef and oceans, restore our iconic landscapes and protect our unique wildlife. Central to our approach is the use of citizen science, whereby people gather data to generate environmental insights, inform future policy and motivate behaviour change. We empower people to save t

he natural world through direct action and policy influence on critical environmental issues. We create knowledge through rigorous and relevant science that informs decision making, whilst our engaging experiences enable anyone to get hands on and make a difference. Our Vision: Working together to create a society that lives in balance with nature

LIVING BEYOND OUR MEANS
In just 50 years we have lost over half of our wildlife and we have as little as 12 years to limit the impacts of climate change. Collaboration between governments, policy-makers, businesses, civil society and scientists is essential if we are to tackle these complex challenges. Earthwatch helps make this happen. Using a blend of science and engagement, we deliver evidence-led experiences that educate and inspire action to arrest environmental decline. Our Mission: To empower people to save the natural world

Empowering people to action for the environment is at the heart of what we do. We are building on half a century of bringing people, science and nature together to create robust scientific knowledge. We are focused on key challenges where we can make the most difference. Around the world, our vibrant Earthwatch community inspires and drives positive change through individual and collective action, creating a more sustainable future and advancing scientific knowledge. The changes we all make in our homes, our workplaces and our communities, along with contributions to scientific research, combine to make an impact globally.

“Taking part in the Earthwatch Student Challenge in high school gave me first-hand insight into how I could turn my passion for the environment into meaningful action. Working on real‑world environmental issues helped shape my decision to study environmental engineering and science at university.”

Programs like Student Challenge help young people build the confidence, skills and experience to become future environmental leaders.

This EOFY, your support can help more students access hands-on conservation experiences, work alongside scientists, and take action to protect waterways, biodiversity and ecosystems.

Because protecting the future starts with empowering the next generation.

Donate before 30 June and help more students like Harmony-tree discover their career path.

📊 122 surveys and counting!

A huge achievement from our Wetlands MangroveWatch team and dedicated volunteers, who have completed 122 field surveys this year, surpassing last year's total.

A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us in the field so far this year 💚

Every survey contributes to a growing body of knowledge that helps us better understand and protect tropical saltmarsh ecosystems. Through this community-led citizen science program, local knowledge and monitoring data come together to track saltmarsh condition, values and threats across northern Australia.

It has been incredible to see such strong community participation and enthusiasm for our local wetlands. Together, we are building a valuable evidence base that supports long-term conservation and helps ensure these important ecosystems have a voice.

🌱 After two years of growth, commitment and community action, the final Earthwatch Australia monitoring session at the Fraser Street Reserve Tiny Forest has taken place.

In a new blog, Earthwatch skilled volunteer, John McMorrow, shares his reflections from attending this milestone monitoring day and explores the role citizen science has played in tracking the forest's progress.

As Earthwatch's stewardship of the site comes to a close, the thriving forest stands as a powerful example of what community-led conservation can achieve.

💬 “The success of the Fraser Street Tiny Forest is truly a reflection of the care and commitment of our volunteers, showing up through planting and monitoring days, watering and weeding events and being advocates for our Forest,” said Shannon Anstee, Climate and Biodiversity Program Manager, Earthwatch Australia.

Thank you to our volunteers, Monash City Council and everyone who has contributed to this project. Together, you've demonstrated the impact of community-led environmental action.

Read John's reflections and learn how citizen science has helped create a thriving pocket of biodiversity in Glen Waverley.

We’re pleased to share that the Earthwatch Australia MangroveWatch program in Townsville has been recognised with a Townsville City Council Sustainability Appreciation Award at EcoFiesta 2026 🎉

This award reflects the collective contribution of volunteers, Traditional Owners, ranger groups, schools, community organisations and research partners who underpin long-term coastal wetland monitoring efforts across the region, alongside the leadership of Earthwatch Program Manager (Wetlands, Coastal & Marine Environments), Lucía Caldas Durán.

Over the past two years, more than 200 participants from Townsville and Yunbenun (Magnetic Island) have engaged in MangroveWatch monitoring activities. In 2026 alone, 42 community scientists contributed 85 Saltmarsh SAVER surveys.

Earthwatch partners with MangroveWatch and wetlands researchers, building the capacity of citizen scientists and Indigenous Rangers to monitor the condition and health of wetlands and translate that knowledge to protect these unique ecosystems. Citizen science plays a critical role in extending environmental monitoring capacity, strengthening local ecological knowledge, and improving responsiveness to environmental change in coastal systems.

A big thank you to the many volunteers, organisations and partners supporting this work, including Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation, Wulgurukaba Leadership Group, Port of Townsville Ltd, Healthy Waters Partnership for the Dry Tropics, Canoe Projects, North Queensland Conservation Council, Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. and NQ Dry Tropics.

Today is World Environment Day and this year’s focus is climate action.

As Sir David Attenborough said, “No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”

At Earthwatch Australia, we know that climate action starts with people, especially young people, who are equipped to understand, care for, and protect the environment.

Across the country, students are stepping up. They’re monitoring biodiversity, restoring habitats, improving water quality, and leading projects that strengthen ecosystems and build climate resilience in their communities.

They’re not just learning about climate change - they’re taking action to address it.

With your support, we can create more opportunities for students to work alongside scientists, build critical environmental skills, and take meaningful action to protect our natural world.

This EOFY, your donation can help Earthwatch empower the next generation with the skills, knowledge and confidence to take meaningful climate action.

03/06/2026

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation every day. Recognising that meaningful change requires action, shared responsibility and ongoing learning.

At Earthwatch Australia, we acknowledge and express our deep gratitude to the Traditional Custodians, Elders and young people who continue to care for and protect Country, and who remain active stewards of Australia’s biodiversity.

We are proud to work alongside Traditional Custodians, Aboriginal Corporations and Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers in support of their goals to safeguard the environment and cultural heritage on Country. Together, we centre Traditional Cultural and Ecological Knowledge in conservation, restoration and adaptive management practices, recognising that caring for Country is strengthened through partnership, respect and listening.

As this National Reconciliation Week wraps up, we reaffirm our commitment to being All In for reconciliation, for Country, and for a future grounded in collaboration, respect and care.
