SMEE DRAWS FIRST BLOOD IN NSW WINGLESS SPRINTS SEASON OPENER
Nathan Smee has made the perfect start to the 2026/27 NSW Wingless Sprints season, claiming victory in Saturday night's opening round of the One6 Industries NSW Club Championship and Western Sydney Speedway Track Championship at Western Sydney Speedway
With a new season underway and valuable championship points on offer, competitors returned to the Sydney venue eager to establish themselves early in what is shaping up to be another competitive season.
The evening's racing commenced with six qualifying heats, which produced six different winners and highlighted the depth of competition throughout the field.
Joel Buettel opened the night with victory in the first heat, before Adam Hotchkis and Jason Bates claimed wins in heats two and three respectively. The second round of heats saw Kyle Mock take out heat four, Andrew Sayre secure heat five and Andrew Seery round out the qualifying program with victory in heat six.
With the heat racing completed, attention turned to the B Main, where the remaining competitors fought for the final four transfer positions into the night's feature event.
Kurtis Jackson, Blake Darvill, Riley Bilson and Mathew Williams successfully raced their way into the A Main, ensuring their night would continue with an opportunity to contest the opening championship feature.
When the A Main rolled onto the circuit, it was Smee who ultimately emerged on top, taking the chequered flag and securing the first feature victory of the new season.
Brad McCarthy delivered a strong performance to finish runner-up, while Kyle Mock backed up his earlier heat race victory with a third-place finish to complete the podium.
The result gives Smee an ideal start to his championship campaign, while McCarthy and Mock also leave the opening round with valuable points towards both championships.
Further down the field, Kurtis Jackson's efforts were recognised with the Get It Done Landscapes Hard Charger Award. Having already fought his way into the feature through the B Main, Jackson continued his charge in the A Main to claim the night's honours.
With the opening round now complete, attention quickly shifts to the first Country Series event of the season, with NSW Wingless Sprints heading to Wagga Speedway this Saturday, 17 October.
The meeting will mark Round 1 of the 2026/27 NSW Wingless Sprints Country Series, giving competitors their first opportunity to collect points towards the Country Series championship prouldly sponsored by MPF Engineering
