Wonthaggi Life Saving Club is more than patrols and uniforms. It’s volunteers, Nippers, families and a strong community coming together to support beach safety and club life.

From our youngest members building confidence in the water, to our surf rescue members, patrol volunteers and behind-the-scenes helpers in the canteen and around the club, every person plays an important role.

There is a place for everyone at Wonthaggi Life Saving Club, and we’d love to welcome new and returning members for the season.

RIPS DON’T WAIT FOR SUMMER!

The warmer months are approaching, but beach safety is important all year round!

Rip currents can occur at any time of year, and knowing how to recognise one could save a life.

Do you know what signs to look for?

Swipe through for some important tips on identifying rip currents and what to do if you find yourself caught in one.

❤️💛Remember, always swim between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled beach. If the flags aren’t up, avoid entering the water.

Share this post with your friends and family as we get ready for another season along our beautiful coastline!

Today is a reminder to be kind to yourself, take a moment to rest, and check in with the people around you.

Life can be busy, overwhelming and challenging at times, but you don’t have to do it all alone. Whether it’s taking a break, talking to someone you trust or simply taking things one day at a time, looking after your mental health matters.

At Wonthaggi Life Saving Club, we’re proud to be part of a community that looks out for one another, both on and off the beach.

💙 Rest when you need it.
💜 Reach out to someone you trust.
❤️ Take one day at a time.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s remind ourselves and those around us that being kind to yourself is just as important as being kind to others. A simple check in, a listening ear or a little understanding can make a real difference.

If you or someone you know needs support, Lifeline is available on 13 11 14.

Victorians aged 75 and over recorded the state’s highest number, proportion and rate of drowning during 2025/26.

Changes in strength, balance, health and medication can affect safety around water. Choose accessible locations, enter the water with someone, wear a lifejacket when appropriate and speak with your doctor if a medical condition or medication may affect swimming or boating.

Enjoy the water, but plan for your safety before entering it.

Swimming and recreational activities were linked to 28% of Victoria’s drowning deaths during 2025/26.

Before entering the water, take a moment to check the depth, currents, waves and weather. Swim with another person, stay within your ability and leave the water if conditions begin to change.

Being prepared does not take the fun out of the water. It helps everyone enjoy it safely.

Oceans and harbours were the leading locations for drowning deaths in Victoria during 2025/26, followed by rivers and creeks, and swimming pools.

Conditions can change quickly, even in familiar places. Check the forecast, identify currents and safe exit points, never swim alone and actively supervise children around every body of water.

If someone is in trouble, call Triple Zero and use a flotation device if available. Avoid entering the water yourself unless you are trained and it is safe to do so.

Victoria recorded 53 drowning deaths during 2025/26, an 8% increase on the 10 year average.

These are not just statistics. Each number represents a person, a family and a community.

Help prevent further incidents by swimming at patrolled beaches, staying between the red and yellow flags, supervising children closely and checking weather and water conditions before heading out.
