Canungra Show 2025

For the second year running the Canungra & District Historical Association held a stand at the Canungra Show. We were most pleased to welcome members of the community to have a look at our displays. Featured this year was a display concerning the 1925 Boy Scout Jamboree held in Canungra.

We also displayed the winning entries of our History Writing Competition, held in conjunction with the Canungra State School, and many of the students brought their parents and friends along to have a look.

We were also pleased that so many current and past residents came along to share their reminiscences and as always, we were able to add to the historical knowledge of the district through their invaluable contributions.

One visitor was Mrs Roma Durston who spoke with our Patron Mr Des Libke and described her growing up in the town and her families’ connections to the district. The Durston family owned and ran a General Store on the corner of Appel and Kidston St, Canungra, where the Information Centre now is.

Further research into the Durston family has uncovered Royal connections. During the royal visit in 1954 the Queens Page, Mr Dickie White, who was a cousin to Mrs R Durston, visited Canungra. Later her Majesty arranged for Mrs Durston to be given a spray of orchids out of her bouquet. Lady Pamela Mountbatton gave young Roma Durston a letter from Primary School students in the UK.

Canungra Show Day 2025 was a wonderful day and, though tiring, was enjoyed by all.

Whilst on holidays in NSW one of our members quite fortuitously met a gentleman by the name of Mr John Curran and he kindly donated a copy of "Green Mountains" by Bernard O'Reilly to the Canungra and District Historical Association.

This copy, signed by Bernard, Molly and Mick O'Reilly, will become a prized addition to our collection."
